B-17G Cockpit Restoration

B-17G Cockpit Restoration B-17G serial number 42-31552 of the 748th Squadron 457th Bomb Group USAAF was hit by flak on a mission to Munich on July 12, 1944. Lt.

We are restoring the cockpit of B-17G number 42-31552 nicknamed My Buddy of the 457th BG USAAF with pieces we recover from the Swiss Alps where it crashed on July 12, 1944. Kerr and his crew of eight could not keep up with the formation with their heavily damaged B-17 and headed southwest in the hope to make it to safety in Switzerland. Unable to maintain altitude and in poor visibility the five e

nlisted men managed to bail out shortly before the aircraft hit a mountain side in Switzerland and took the lives of the four officers. We have been retrieving prices of the aircraft from the crash site for over 20 years and started the reconstruction of the cockpit section. It is currently located at the Festungs Museum Crestawald near Sufers in Switzerland. This page is dedicated to Lt. Kerr and his crew and will be updated as the restoration processes.
