Das Gemälde "Zerstrahlt unter heiterem Himmel" gibt eines der Grundthemen von Bernard Schultzes (1915-2005) Gesamtwerk wieder: Chaos und Struktur. Der Künstler selbst sprach von einem 'provozierten Chaos', das im malerischen Prozess in eine 'komplizierte Ordnung' aufgelöst wird.

Am Anfang von Schultzes Malerei steht die weiße Leinwand. Von einem, häufig auch mehreren Punkten ausgehend, tastet sich Bernard Schultze in den Bildraum vor. Erst treibt er eine Farb-Form ein Stück weit, um sie sich dann verzweigen zu lassen oder abzubrechen, erneut anzusetzen und in eine andere Richtung weiterzuentwickeln. Dabei dreht er verschiedentlich den Bildträger, ändert die Richtungsachsen von Horizontal und Vertikal, Oben und Unten und schafft so während des Malvorgangs neue bildräumliche Situationen.

Die künstlerische Haltung im Schaffensprozess von Schultze ist klar dem Informel verpflichtet, wie ihn der Künstler in Deutschland der 50er Jahre als Protagonist prägte.

Neben dem hier vorgestellten Gemälde zeigt die Galerie Henze & Ketterer in der aktuellen Ausstellung im Kunst-Depot weitere grossformatige Werke des Künstlers, neben dem 4-Meter-Diptychon-Gemälde "Windhimmel" (1990) auch die grosse Migof-Skulptur "Myrrst" (1963), mit welcher Schultze seine Malerei in die dritte Dimension überführt.

Das Gemälde 'Sängerin am Piano' wurde 1931 von Dr. Carl Hagemann (1867–1940), einem der bedeutendsten privaten Förderer der modernen Kunst in Deutschland und engen Sammler Ernst Ludwig Kirchners, erworben. Hagemann besuchte Kirchner mehrfach in Davos und schätzte das Werk als herausragendes Beispiel seines „Neuen Stils“. Später wechselte es durch mehrere prominente Sammlungen und erlangte zeitweise öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit, als es sich im Besitz von Meshulam Riklis und der Schauspielerin Pia Zadora befand.

Das Bild zeigt eine singende Pianistin, deren weit ausgestreckte Arme und Hände den kompositorischen Schwerpunkt bilden. Kirchner verbindet die Figuren durch flächige Farb- und Formfelder zu einer nahezu abstrakten Komposition, ohne die konkrete Szene aufzugeben. Besonders innovativ ist die Visualisierung der Musik durch schraffierte, säulenartige Formen über der Klaviatur, die den Eindruck sichtbar gemachter Klänge erzeugen und den experimentellen Charakter des Werkes unterstreichen.

Bereits bei seiner Entstehung löste das Gemälde kontroverse Reaktionen aus. Während Kirchner es zu seinen besten Arbeiten zählte und Hagemann seine künstlerische Qualität ausdrücklich bestätigte, wurde der „Neue Stil“ anfangs auch scharf kritisiert. Dennoch blieb das Werk sowohl für Kirchner als auch für Hagemann und dessen Familie von besonderer Bedeutung.

Die bewegte Geschichte des Gemäldes reicht bis in die Gegenwart. Zuletzt war es ein Schlüsselwerk der Ausstellung ‘Kirchner.Picasso’, die zunächst im LWL Museum in Münster (Deutschland) und anschliessend im Kirchner Museum in Davos (Schweiz) gezeigt wurde. In beiden Ausstellungen fand das Gemälde grosse Beachtung und unterstreicht bis heute seine besondere Stellung innerhalb von Kirchners Spätwerk.
