Selda Arslan (born 1984 in Zurich, Switzerland) is a self-taught contemporary artist whose work explores the tension between darkness and vibrancy, figuration and abstraction. Her visual language is multifaceted and emotionally charged: dark, sometimes bizarre figures coexist with colorful, expressive abstract forms. Each artwork functions as a narrative space, carrying its own story and inner logic.
Guided by Pablo Picasso’s notion, „I did not say everything, but | painted „Arslan translates her thoughts, emotions, and observations directly onto the canvas. Painting becomes her primary mode of communication-an act of freedom through which she gives form to what cannot always be articulated in words. This freedom of expression is central to her artistic practice and holds particular significance for her, as she understands it as a privilege that is not universally granted.
Arslan’s work is intuitive and personal, yet deliberately open to interpretation. Rather than offering fixed meanings, her paintings invite viewers to engage with their own perceptions and emotional responses. The coexistence of unsettling imagery and vivid color creates a dynamic visual tension that reflects inner states, contradictions, and the complexity of human experience. As a self-taught artist, Selda Arslan has developed an independent artistic voice that resists categorization. Her practice is rooted in authenticity, emotional
depth, and an uncompromising commitment to artistic freedom.
