🍂LAST DAYS 🍂

«ICH WARTE AUF EIN GEWITTER»
Pascale Birchler currently on view until 13.07.24
Sound by Dimitri Howald

Pascale Birchler invites us to a new relationship with time, a slowing down that rouses us into some kind of suspension, a deliberate lag to make space for
reflection. In unison with this thought is how Birchler perceptively works with space in an all-encompassing manner. «ICH WARTE AUF EIN GEWITTER» is
treated as a tableaux. Sculpture, painting, installation and sound are interwoven in what becomes an unfolding of a plot, one that is non-linear, relating to the outside and inside, intimate yet also evasive. A recent development in her work is the
inclusion of sound and in this instance, she has collaborated with composer and musician Dimitri Howald.

What an action-packed few weeks it has been!🎉 A special shoutout to those who attended our walkthrough during Zurich Art Weekend with Pascale Birchler, Linda Jensen, and Arianna Gellini. We also enjoyed having you at the Art Walk West which happened end of May.

«ICH WARTE AUF EIN GEWITTER»
Pascale Birchler - Sound by Dimitri Howald
24.05.24 – 13.07.24

Enchanted by the ambivalence of fragility and strength, Birchler perceptively works with space. The sensory languages of sculpture, painting, installation and sound are interwoven in what becomes an unfolding of a plot, one that relates to the confines of the outside and inside, one that is intimate yet also evasive, like a hauntingly beautiful chord stuck in your mind.

🥕🐄🌾Coming up: Oz Oderbolz at Basel Social Club! Last Tango, invited as one of the non-commercial interventions, is pleased to present the work of Oz Oderbolz. BSC is going fully outdoors this year, on the verge of the city, where the land is farmed to produce what we consume. It’s not a wild forest; it is land that is worked, following natural cycles, with animals living there as well. This year’s BSC edition is most definitely a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of the enclosed fair grounds! Basel Social Club embarks on its third iteration in yet a new location from June 9–16, 2024.

The works by Oz Oderbolz resonate with the surroundings, fittingly related to farming and countryside aesthetics, the politics of labour, building upon the imaginations of what constitutes contemporary rural life and how it can be queerly re-imagined. Two works by Oz Oderbolz will be on view: Dick Hammer (2023) and Kreiselheuer Pöttinger (typ zk44 / 6527-1321) (2023).
For inquiries please contact Linda Jensen at [email protected]

Please see our website for more infos

Oderbolz is also currently featured in the exhibition Country Offside at Ausstellungsraum Klingenthal curated by Violeta Mansilla

Talk & Poetry Reading

Breathing, moving, living on the page, CAConrad’s exhilarating work is centred on the (Soma)tic ritual, their celebrated practice which draws on nature, crystals, meditation and interactions with strangers to create an ‚extreme present‘ of unfettered creativity from which poems can emerge.

In this upcoming session at Last Tango CAConrad gets us acquianted with the world of avain intelligence, the importance of creativity and resistance, amongst other things. 72 new poems have come to fruitition through writing with a (Soma)tic ritual practice involving the collaboration with animals. With keen persipacity CA starts to develop a special connection to various creatures, of which an amicable reciprocity begins to emerge.

Written with urgency, hope, anger and joy, the poems that result are an ode to survival in a world that humanity has poisoned, and a testament to a love that knows no by-laws.

Last Tango is excited to be releasing the fold-out Two Different Landscapes. It includes a brand new poem specially created for this occasion and an excerpt from Listen to the Golden Boomerang Return that has just been released.

An edition of 100, it will be available for free. Donations are of course welcome. CAConrad will be happy to sign your copy!

Listen to the Golden Boomerang Return will be available for sale.

Last Tango would like to thank Landis & Gyr Stiftung and Pink Cross for their kind support for this project.

This event is in collaboration with Shedhalle. On 26.05.24 CAConrad will be conducting a workshop as part of The Institute for Embodied Creative Practices at Shedhalle.  Please see here for more information regarding registration and the program

Last Tango is pleased to present «ICH WARTE AUF EIN GEWITTER» a solo exhibition by Pascale Birchler. «ICH WARTE AUF EIN GEWITTER» will be treated as a tableaux. “…Ein Lieblingssymbol der Signaletik ist der Pfeil. Ohne gross nachzudenken, leistendie Menschen seinem Imperativ Folge. Wenn Künstler mit diesem Zeichen arbeiten, sind schnell grundsätzliche Fragen im Spiel. Dies trifft in jedem Fall auf die karge Ausstellung zu, die Sam Porritt (*1979) und Francesco Cagnin (*1988) bei Last Tango eingerichtet haben: Kunst will hier nicht Konsumgut sein, sondern Anlass zum Nachdenken…”

“…Draw a line across the page then another and another, now vertically, again and again. A grid, perfect! A distributed space, a divided territory. Visually rhymes with spreadsheets and cages to be filled with numbers and captives. We are the best architects of our own confinement. Pincered by time and space, signed up to payment plans and rental agreements.Insurance: How to manage the uncertainty of life, snares us by stoking our fears. This or that might happen, terrifying alternate worlds hedged against by the steady drip of premium payments. Fear of loss, a devastatingly powerful motivator. Both insurance and the grid are the imposition of order on chaos...”

“…What does it mean to stake a claim? How does (survival) anxiety affect behavior? What kinds of architectures of dread exist? How does fear and paranoia affect society? Herd mentality as a flight response as portrayed in Ionesco’s Rhinoceros and Bradburry’s Fahrenheit 451 seem like relevant sources to revisit in moments of crisis. Roland Barthes makes a point about finding a way to act amidst polarizing situations in his theory of the neutral. Writer Maggie Nelson paraphrases it well and thinks of a possible approach: “[that] in the face of dogmatism, the menacing pressure to take sides, offer novel responses: to flee, to escape, to demur, to shift or refuse terms, to disengage, to turn away…”

Porritt is ongoingly absorbed by the individual or collective will to engage and what it takes to raise a voice against all odds. Testing the limits of the sensical, Porritt has been examining the attention-grabbing potential of the graphical symbol of the arrow.

🌐Thanks for coming to our Opening!🌐

Francesco Cagnin & Sam Porritt on view until 27.04.24

Opening hours
Fridays from 15-18 and Saturdays from 12-18
We are also open by appointment.

Francesco Cagnin and Sam Porritt are bent on understanding meaning-making and investigating thought systems be it the sociology of culture (agency, ethics, everyday life) or topics related to semiotics (how meaning is created and how meaning is communicated). For the upcoming exhibition Cagnin is interested in doing so through an articulation on the privileged and safeguarded life, exploring word play, the grid, and the cause-and-effect scenarios of the “Schadenskizzen” advertisements by die Mobiliar. Porritt is ongoingly absorbed by the individual or collective will to engage and what it takes to raise a voice against all odds.
