Yesterday, a conversation took place between Niloufar Emamifar and architect-artist, researcher, curator and publisher Golnar Abbasi, on the last day of Niloufar’s exhibition ‘Offcut’. Thank you to all who joined us to celebrate the closing.

Our next exhibition, ‘Copies of real-life objects, tools and food’ by Henrik Olesen, opens on 12 June 2026 as part of Zurich Art Weekend.

Am letzten Tag der Ausstellung «Offcut» von Niloufar Emamifar fand ein Gespräch zwischen Niloufar und Architektin-Künstlerin, Akademikerin, Kuratorin und Verlegerin Golnar Abbasi statt. Vielen Dank an alle, die gestern am Anlass teilgenommen haben.

Closing Weekend 23–25 May 2026

Last chance to visit our current exhibitions, Intermezzo by Kaarel Kurismaa and Offcut by Niloufar Emamifar.

Join us for the final weekend of the exhibitions and stop by our bookshop and archive sale, taking place from Saturday to Monday, 11am–6pm.

On Monday, 25 May at 11.30am, we are thrilled to welcome Niloufar Emamifar back to Zurich. Together with architect, artist, and researcher Golnar Abbasi, she will reflect on their respective practices and discuss extractive and subversive spatial practices, site-specificity, and photos of abandoned mattresses on sidewalks.

Enjoy free admission to both exhibitions on Monday, 25 May 2026.

A conversation with Niloufar Emamifar and Golnar Abbasi

On the last day of her exhibition ‘Offcut’, artist Niloufar Emamifar will be joined for a conversation by architect-artist, researcher, curator and publisher Golnar Abbasi.

Thirteen years ago, Niloufar Emamifar and Golnar Abbasi met in Tehran, where a shared interest in spatial politics brought their practices into dialogue at the intersection of art and architecture. Since then, their conversations have continued as their lives diverged geographically. Here at Kunsthalle Zurich, they reunite to reflect on their respective practices and discuss extractive and subversive spatial practice, site-specificity, and photos of abandoned mattresses on sidewalks – in a conversation shaped as much by absence and distance as by proximity.

This event will take place in English; it will be photographed. Entrance to Kaarel Kurismaa and Niloufar Emamifar’s exhibitions is free on the 25 May.

Am letzten Tag der Ausstellung «Offcut» von Niloufar Emamifar findet ein Gespräch zwischen der Künstlerin und Architektin-Künstlerin, Forscherin, Kuratorin und Verlegerin Golnar Abbasi statt.

Niloufar Emamifar und Golnar Abbasi lernten sich vor dreizehn Jahren in Teheran kennen. Ein gemeinsames Interesse an Raumpolitik brachte ihre künstlerischen Praktiken an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Architektur miteinander in Dialog. Seither haben sie diesen Austausch fortgesetzt, während sich ihre Lebenswege geografisch auseinanderentwickelten. In der Kunsthalle Zürich kommen sie nun wieder zusammen, um über ihre jeweiligen Praktiken zu reflektieren und über extraktive und subversive räumliche Praktiken, Ortsspezifität sowie Fotos von verlassenen Matratzen auf Trottoirs zu diskutieren – ein Gespräch, das ebenso von Abwesenheit und Distanz wie von Nähe geprägt ist.

Das Gespräch findet in englischer Sprache statt; es werden Bilder gemacht. Die Ausstellungen von Niloufar Emamifar und Kaarel Kurismaa können am 25. Mai bei freiem Eintritt besucht werden.

‘Alma’s Railroad’, 1997, is a large three-part sculpture resembling high-tech machinery or a space vehicle. Electronically amplified through contact microphones, the work emits dark tones, conducted through purple plastic and cardboard tubing. While the titles of Kaarel Kurismaa’s works frequently feature musical references, Alma’s Railroad moves between personal memory and linguistic wordplay, alluding to both Kurismaa’s aunt Alma and the Estonian word ‘allmaa’ (underground).

Kaarel Kurismaa’s ‘Intermezzo’ was curated by F***y Hauser and is on display at Kunsthalle Zürich until 25 May 2026.

«Alma’s Railroad», 1997, ist eine grossformatige Skulptur in drei Teilen, die an Hightech-Maschinen oder Raumfahrzeuge erinnert und elektronisch verstärkt wird. Die Skulptur erzeugt dumpfen, durch violette Karton- und Kunststoffröhren geleiteten Töne. Während die Titel Kaarel Kurismaas Arbeiten meist musikalische Bezüge aufweisen, bewegt «Alma’s Railroad» sich zwischen persönlicher Erinnerung und Wortspiel und verweist zugleich auf Kurismaas Tante Alma sowie auf das estnische Wort «allmaa» (Untergrund).

Kaarel Kurismaa «Intermezzo» wurde von F***y Hauser kuratiert und ist noch bis 25. Mai 2025 in der Kunsthalle Zürich zu sehen.

Niloufar Emamifar ‘Offcut’ was curated by F***y Hauser and is on display at Kunsthalle Zürich until 25 May 2026.

The exhibition starts with a work of the same name: the entire floor of Kunsthalle Zürich is raised by twelve centimetres and finished with a black sprung surface manufactured by Gerriets. Two incisions are made in this elevated plane at the locations of the gallery’s large windows, each mirroring the exact proportions of the window it abuts. The extracted panels are then repositioned at 34 and 18 degree angles to the floor.

Niloufar Emamifar «Offcut» wurde von F***y Hauser kuratiert und ist noch bis 25. Mai 2025 in der Kunsthalle Zürich zu sehen.

Die Ausstellung beginnt mit einer neuen, gleichnamigen Arbeit: Der gesamte Boden der Kunsthalle Zürich wird um zwölf Zentimeter angehoben und mit einer schwarzen, gefederten
Oberfläche von Gerriets versehen. An den Stellen der grossen Fenster des Ausstellungsraums sind zwei Einschnitte in diese erhöhte Ebene gesetzt, die jeweils exakt die Proportionen des angrenzenden Fensters aufnehmen. Die herausgelösten Paneele werden anschliessend in Winkeln von 34 und 18 Grad zum Boden neupositioniert.
