This video shows a Roman Catholic priest and bishop participating in the Ekpe dance—an iconic traditional institution in Calabar.

When Christianity was first introduced to the area, missionaries encountered Ekpe, the dominant traditional authority. They sought its support in compelling the Efik people to attend church.

According to oral sources, Ekpe issued a law requiring church attendance.

Today, the Catholic Church continues to honour the Ekpe institution with great respect.
