INKstudio is excited to announce Peng Kanglong’s return to The Historical Grand Courtyard in the Da’an District of Taipei in his first solo exhibition since his American debut during Asia Week New York in the Spring of 2023 and his Mainland Chinese debut at INKstudio, Beijing in the Fall of that same year. In his New York debut, Peng Kanglong captured the attention of American scholars such as Marc F. Wilson, former Director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum, and the New York Times which observed, “Peng Kanglong, who studied ink painting at Taipei National University of the Arts, [takes] inspiration from 17th-century monks as well as from a more recent predecessor like Huang Binhong (1865-1955); the lush scenes that result feel like contemporary rejoinders to an ancient conversation.” Then, in Beijing, his distinctive synthesis of the traditional landscape and flower genres drew focused curatorial attention from Wang Shaoqiang, Director of the Guangdong Museum of Art, Deng Feng, curator at the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC), Alan Yeung, curator of ink art at M+ Museum in Hong Kong, and Stephen Little, curator of Chinese art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

The exhibition’s title “(In/Ex)haling the Vast Wilderness”, refers to the lines “觀花匪禁,吞吐大荒” from the Twenty-four Verses on Poetry by the Tang Dynasty poet Sikong Tu (837-908) evoking the experience of viewing Peng Kanglong’s unique synthesis of flower and landscape painting.

“(In/Ex)haling the Vast Wilderness” will be followed in November of this year by his first major museum solo retrospective, entitled “Peng Kanglong: Beguiling the Eye”, at the Guangdong Museum of Art. The exhibition at The Historical Grand Courtyard thus represents a unique opportunity for the Taiwanese public to see the newest creations by one of its most important living artists in the lead up to his debut museum exhibition in Mainland China.

In her Talisman Series artworks, Bingyi abandons the Western binary opposition between the "figurative" and the "abstract”, and argues that whether abstract or figurative, once you remove the qualifiers “abstract” chou 抽 and “figurative” ju 具, what remains is “ ” xiang 象.

During that time, continued to explore the notion of the Mind and consciousness. She now sees awakening of the Mind as a communion of Wanwu and the Universe. “心即萬物,腦即宇宙” her belief that "the Mind is all that exists; as the brain embodies the universe itself” is expressed through the wholistic notion of xiang. The are the ultimate that allude to all kinds of historic phenomenon, calligraphy, abstraction and symbolism but nevertheless stand completely as their own being. From action, automatic painting, calligraphy, shanshui painting and the unique geomatic power of the Longhu Mountains, the Talisman Series artworks newly emerge as the purest form of life and an unprecedented manifestation of the ink art language.

Whether it is abstraction or figurative, heaven or earth, mind or brain, Bingyi presents her recent works as a maze of beauty and contemplation.

“Maze of Mind” ties together twelve years of Bingyi’s artistic practice dealing with consciousness and intelligence. She finally explains her thinking on the Mind in the most concise and direct fashion: in terms of painterly expression. She sees the Awakening of Mind as paintings, as the movement of Mind itself and she sees as the body giving birth to the image of the Mind. Whether it is abstraction or figurative, heaven or earth, mind or brain, Bingyi presents her recent works as a maze of beauty and contemplation.

Through a collaboration between the artist, The Limitless Arts Center and INKstudio, this distinctive body of work will be exhibited to the public for the first time in the form of an immersive installation within the maze-like, ancient structure of the The Taiwan Prefecture Confucian Scholar Examination Hall in central Taichung.

All three series—“Wanwu”, “Lightening” and “Tallisman”—bear a strong connection to Taiwan: twelve years ago Bingyi created Wanwu at an art center in the Longhu Mountains supported by Taiwanese musician Liu Jiachang. In 2025, Bingyi returned to the Longhu Mountains, prompted by her meeting with Jason Chi — artist, curator, designer, and founder of Limitless Arts — in Taipei that May.
