French artist duo Xolo Cuintle (Xolo Cuintle) is featured in the 9th China Shanghai Jing’an International Sculpture Project (2026 JISP), curated by UCCA Lab, an initiative of UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA Center for Contemporary Art), and organized by Jing’an Sculpture Park.

Commissioned to create a new work for the exhibition, the duo completed the project during their residency at Shanghai Jiayuanghai Art Museum this August. This marks Xolo Cuintle’s first large-scale public art project in China. It will be unveiled at Jing’an Sculpture Park on September 24.

Under the theme “Shapes of Becoming,” the JISP this year brings together 33 artists and artist groups from China and around the world.

This project has been made possible with the generous support of the Consulate General of France in Shanghai, the Institut français de Chine, Shanghai Jiayuanghai Art Museum, UCCA Lab, and Jing’an Sculpture Park. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of them.

Sun Yue is participating in the UCCA Clay Museum exhibition “Brutalist Modernism: Contemporary Accolay Ceramics” in Wuxi, China. Her works are presented alongside historical pieces from the French Accolay workshop and recent works by seven other contemporary artists. Jointly presented by UCCA and Le Consortium Museum in Dijon, France, the exhibition is co-curated by Franck Gautherot, Seungduk Kim, and Zhang Yao, with exhibition design by Matali Crasset.

“Brutalist Modernism: Contemporary Accolay Ceramics” explores the historical significance of postwar Accolay ceramics and their enduring influence on contemporary ceramic practice. Focusing on works produced by the French Accolay workshop from the late 1940s to the late 1980s, the exhibition brings together approximately 120 Accolay ceramic pieces and recent works by eight contemporary artists. By placing historical Accolay ceramics in dialogue with contemporary artistic practices, the exhibition examines their shared concerns with processes of making, materiality, and clay’s expressive potential.

Sun Yue’s practice begins with concrete and deeply grounded personal experience. Rather than waiting for inspiration to arrive by chance, she places greater trust in the details of the creative process—details that can be touched, repeated, and gradually accumulated. Every press, turn, and pause made as her hands engage with the clay becomes a point of departure from which the work’s form develops. In her practice, clay is both a material through which ideas are realized and a site where thinking takes place. Form is not fully predetermined; instead, it gradually emerges during the making process through the interplay of bodily movement, material response, and accumulated time.

Plant, Glow, Sit with Xolo Cuintle 🪑🌱✨

Last Sunday, at Jing’An Culture Center in Shanghai, French artist duo Xolo Cuintle: Romy Texier and Valentin Vie Binet, invited a group of young participants to reimagine the everyday chair.

Using lightweight clay and other materials, the children decorated and transformed miniature chair models, experimenting freely with materials, textures and forms. Guided by the artists, each child turned a familiar piece of furniture into a unique sculptural object: playful, imaginative and full of personality.

The workshop offered the children a hands-on introduction to Xolo Cuintle’s practice, which moves fluidly between sculpture, furniture and the spaces we inhabit.

Jointly conceived and organized by Jing’an Culture Center and UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, the workshop also offered a first glimpse into the duo’s participation in the 9th China Shanghai Jing’an International Sculpture Project, opening in late September 2026.

We look forward to encountering Xolo Cuintle’s work and meeting everyone again, in Shanghai’s urban spaces this autumn.

Immortal Sea infusion, linen canvas, stretcher frame, 50 x 70 cm

These paintings are made from infusions of sea water collected where the Eight Immortals of Daoist mythology set out for the lands of eternity. Inspired by the legend of Qin Shin Huang who looked for immortality, they reveal the feelings of immortality we can experience when staring at the sea.

这些绘画以取自传说中八仙出海之地的海水为材料创作。灵感来自秦始皇寻求长
生不老的故事,它们揭示了当人们凝望大海时所能体验到的那种近乎永恒的感受。
