The second in our series of posts showcasing projects within the “Architecture of Possibility: Zaha Hadid Architects” exhibition at  is ZHA’s Morpheus Hotel on Macau.
Developed for Melco Resorts & Entertainment, one of Asia’s largest developers of entertainment resorts, the 40-storey, 150,000m² Morpheus tower combines dramatic public spaces and generous guest rooms with inventive engineering and formal cohesion. Built over the existing abandoned foundations of an unrealized tower, the design optimises the hotel’s interiors with the world’s first free-form high-rise exoskeleton. 
Vortices within the structure create external voids through the full-height atrium and define the hotel’s spectacular public spaces. The comprehensive parametric model ZHA developed for the Morpheus combined all of the hotel’s aesthetic, structural and fabrication requirements; enabling every new contribution from the global design and construction teams to be recalibrated, analysed and checked by highly automated systems in real time.
In 2018, TIME Magazine listed Morpheus Hotel as one of the World’s Greatest Places based on key factors including quality, originality, innovation, sustainability and influence. South China Morning Post described the building as “Revolutionary. Morpheus‘ imaginative design doesn’t so much raise the bar as propel it into orbit” –
Wall Street Journal: “Morpheus hotel is an instant icon, heralding a new era of design-driven development… Architecture as an artform.”

First in our series of posts showcasing projects within the “Architecture of Possibility: Zaha Hadid Architects” exhibition at Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art & Urban Planning (MOCAUP) is ZHA’s first built project in China—the Guangzhou Opera House.

The Guardian (UK): “Sometimes, just sometimes, architecture makes you want to burst out into song… The new opera house is one of the most remarkable buildings not just in China, but the whole world. A truly radical design that shapes and defines a new stretch of the city and boasts inspiring and unexpected public spaces... a virtuoso performance.”

With one of China’s largest operatic theatres, the Guangzhou Opera House opened in 2010 and has welcomed more than 6 million visitors to its superb program of acclaimed performances by renowned local, national and international artists—it’s fluid design resembling pebbles in a stream smoothed over centuries by flowing water references the site’s rich history on the banks of the Pearl River.

作为《建筑无垠：扎哈·哈迪德建筑事务所设计展》展览项目系列的首篇内容，我们聚焦于事务所在中国落成的第一个项目——广州大剧院。

英国《卫报》对这个项目评价道：“有时候，只是有时候，建筑会让你情不自禁想要放声歌唱……最新落成的大剧院不仅是中国最引人瞩目的建筑之一，也是世界范围内最杰出的作品之一。这是一个真正先锋性的设计，它塑造并定义了一片全新的城市空间，同时创造了鼓舞人心、出人意料的公共空间……一场大师级别的演出。”

广州大剧院于2010年正式开放，拥有中国规模最大的歌剧院之一。自启用以来，它已吸引超过600万名观众来这里观看由本地、国家级及国际知名艺术家带来的高水准演出。歌剧院流动而富于雕塑感的设计模仿河流中经年累月被水流冲刷平滑的鹅卵石造型，呼应了珠江沿岸深厚的历史与文化语境。

The Zaha Hadid Architects exhibition is being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art & Urban Planning(MOCAUP), Shenzhen, organized and co-curated by MOCAUP and ZHA. This exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the firm’s 50-year design evolution. Using time and thematic elements as narrative guides, the exhibition begins with Zaha Hadid’s longstanding connections to China and highlights urban practices within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Through models, video installations, and immersive presentations, it demonstrates ZHA’s ongoing explorations in interdisciplinary research, advanced technologies, and innovative architectural language, as well as its responses to contemporary urban challenges and future lifestyles.

Fifty-three contemporary Chinese painters spanning three generations—senior, middle-aged and young—are invited to participate, showcasing nearly 100 surrealist works.

🥳MOCAUP, in collaboration with NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE, presents “Light, Reflection, Transparency”—Hajime Sorayama’s first solo exhibition in South China, which opened on October 12. This major retrospective showcases nearly 80 of the artist’s most significant works spanning half a century from the late 1970s to the present.

⚙️Acclaimed as the “Father of the Sexy Robot,” Hajime Sorayama is celebrated worldwide for his masterful fusion of organic human forms with mechanical precision. His distinctive “mechanical aesthetic” has profoundly influenced global visual culture, from film and fashion to design.

Hajime Sorayama’s first solo exhibition in South China, “Light, Reflection, Transparency,” opened on October 12 at MOCAUP in association with NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the spectacular debut in South China of Sorayama‘s iconic 12-meter-tall, several-ton-heavy Sexy Robot sculpture. The monumental sculpture has been installed on the MOCAUP outdoor plaza.

🎉Hajime Sorayama’s first solo exhibition in South China, “Light, Reflection, Transparency,” will open on October 12 at MOCAUP in association with NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE.

🛸In a prelude to the main exhibition, MOCAUP is partnering with UpperHills during the National Day holiday to display the large-scale public artwork Space Traveler (approx. 4 meters high). This is an innovative practice of integrating art into public spaces, as well as an extended manifestation of the museum‘s domain.

🚀This piece explores a futuristic narrative beyond the human form, inviting public contemplation on themes of intelligence, physicality, and time.

🥳MOCAUP, in collaboration with NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE, will present “Light, Reflection, Transparency”-Hajime Sorayama’s first solo exhibition in South China, opening on October 12. This major retrospective showcases nearly 80 of the artist’s most significant works spanning half a century from the late 1970s to the present.
