AFA (Art For All S AFA (Art for All Society) is a non-profitable art organization established in 2007 in Macau.

Our objectives are to enhance the development of Macau contemporary art and to facilitate local art creations. Our aim is to provide a stable creative environment so as to encourage more artists to devote themselves in art creation. At the same time, by organizing exhibitions and participating international art fairs, we promote our artists’ works and try to introduce their works to the art marke

t. We hope, by all these means, we can gradually help to create a healthy cultural market which can provide more opportunities for local art workers to develop their careers and to contribute for the bigger art scene of Macau. To introduce Macau Art to Mainland China and to build an art exchange platform between Macau and Beijing, we have set up a branch, AFA Beijing, in October 2008. AFA Beijing is located in “798 Art Zone”, consisting two sections -- the exhibition area and artist studios. Exhibitions organized by AFA Beijing present newest artworks by artists from Mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan, showing the international city of Beijing various cultural forms. AFA has also established an art scholarship program to encourage and support young artists in Macau to continue their study in Mainland China or abroad so as to foster more excellent local arts practitioners. Heading toward the future, AFA will continue to focus on the development of contemporary art, which includes painting, installation, photography, sculpture, multimedia and so forth and will continue to organize high-quality solo exhibitions of Macau artists and cooperate with artists from Mainland China in joint exhibitions so as to complement Macau SAR Government’s plan on the development of cultural industries.

In Memoriam: Un Chi Iam (Mrs. Mio) Rest in Peace

The Art for All Society (AFA) deeply mourns the passing of our esteemed artist and teacher, Mrs. Un Chi Iam (Mrs. Mio), who left us on April 4, 2026.

Mrs. Un was a foundational pillar of the Macao art community. As a co-founder of the Círculo dos Amigos da Cultura de Macau (CAC) and a dedicated educator, she spent decades nurturing the spirit of contemporary and traditional Chinese painting. Her art was a vibrant bridge between tradition and modern expression, characterized by its poetic ink wash and bold, expressive colors.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family. Her artistic legacy and her unwavering contribution to the development of Macao’s visual arts will remain forever in our hearts.

🙏🤍🙏

📽️ Exhibition Highlight |

Embarking from a lucid dream to a profound dialogue on mortality and existence.

In her solo exhibition Cruising Through This Mortal Coil, artist Hio Lam Lei uses the rituals of the Ghost Festival as a conceptual starting point, transforming death anxieties into evocative video, installation, and drawing works. By reimagining “posthumous journeys,” Lei creates a distorted mirror that reflects our own living trajectories and the meaning of our daily existence.

Ultimately, to confront death is to reawaken our awareness of being alive.

If you missed the opening ceremony, watch the video below to step into this symbolic itinerary. The exhibition is now open at Albergue SCM D1 Hall—we look forward to seeing you there.

🌟AFA exhibition “Cruising Through This Mortal Coil – Solo Exhibition of Hio Lam Lei” has successfully opened!🌟

Organised by AFA Macau, “Cruising Through This Mortal Coil – Solo Exhibition of Hio Lam Lei”, had been successfully opened at The Albergue SCM on March 25. Lots of guests had come to support, including Mr. Van Pou Lon, Director of Division of Visual Art of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mr. David Lomastro, Consul General of Belgium; Ms. Catarina Cottinelli, Director of Macao Delegation of Orient Foundation; Mr. Lok Hei, President of the Macau Artist Society;Ms. Lam Sio Man, Director of District Development Center and Kun Wang Tou, Council Member of AFA etc, as well as a group of local artists, cultural figures, and art enthusiasts, making it a vibrant and lively occasion.

The current exhibition is curated by Chang Chan. Taking the Hungry Ghost Festival’s offering rituals as its starting point, the exhibition examines how ritual practices ease death anxiety and constructs a symbolic itinerary. The artist Hio Lam Lei creates upon childhood death anxieties to confront the fear of death in the work “If They Really Exist”, and across video, installation and drawing reimagines the routes of wandering spirits. By using posthumous journeys as a distorted mirror of living trajectories, the works reverse the gaze: they ask how one might properly inhabit the finite passage from Point A to Point B in time, and whether the trails of solitary ghosts reflect the lives once lived by the living. Curator Chang Chan frames the exhibition with philosophical and anthropological reflections, prompting viewers to confront mortality and, in doing so, acknowledge and reawaken their own lived presence.

Cruising Through This Mortal Coil – Solo Exhibition of Hio Lam Lei is sponsored by the Cultural Development Fund of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region. The exhibition is located at The Albergue SCM D1 Hall, which is situated at Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro No.8, Macau. The exhibition will be opened to public from 25 of March to 24 of April, Opening hours: Mondays 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Tuesdays to Sundays 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. For enquiries, please call 6357 3404 during office hours, email: [email protected] or visit the AFA website at www.afamacau.com.

Exhibition Opening✨

AFA exhibition: Ephemera - Women Narratives in Contemporary Images Exhibition Series II: “Cruising Through This Mortal Coil – Solo Exhibition of Hio Lam Lei” Coming soon!

The opening ceremony of Cruising Through This Mortal Coil – Solo Exhibition of Hio Lam Lei, organised by AFA Macau, will be held on the 25 of March 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at Albergue SCM D1, which is situated at Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro No.8, Macau. This exhibition is the second part of the Ephemera - Women Narratives in Contemporary Images Exhibition Series - the annual program of the Macau Art For All Society (AFA) in 2025.

The current exhibition is curated by Chang Chan and showcases drawings, video and installation works by young artist Hio Lam Lei. Often utilising Analytical Psychology as a research tool, her practice examines societal norms and their influence on individuals’ self-identification. Her recent research focuses on exploring the psychodynamics underlying ritual and healing practices in Han folk religious context.

Taking the Hungry Ghost Festival—a cultural juncture where the spectral and the mundane intertwine through rituals of mercy—as its conceptual point of departure, Cruising Through This Mortal Coil explores the architecture of our existential anxieties. Artist Hio Lam Lei utilizes the festival's offering rituals to confront the void, seeking a self-reflexive transmutation from the fear of death.

Through the work If They Really Exist, Lei launches a series of speculative inquiries, beckoning viewers to embark on a spiritual voyage. Traversing a symbolic landscape that shifts from the "Sea of Suffering" to the "Mirror of Retribution," the collection of video, installation, and drawings functions as a plot of the afterlife. Here, Lei reverses the typical gaze: she uses the journey of the dead to illuminate the path of the living. She asks us to consider: in the definitive transit from Point A to Point B, what does it mean to truly inhabit one’ s time? The wandering trails of solitary ghosts become, in her hands, a haunting mirror for the human condition.

The exhibition will be opened to public from 25 of March to 24 of April, Opening hours: Mondays 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Tuesdays to Sundays 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Cruising Through This Mortal Coil – Solo Exhibition of Hio Lam Lei is organised by AFA Macau and sponsored by the Cultural Development Fund of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region. For enquiry or feedback, please contact Ms. Chan at (853) 6357 3404 or email to [email protected].

(Alice Kok)

【 A Journey from Mind to Mind: Alice Kok & Her New Book 】

"It never feels like work. It comes from a deep, innate passion." — Alice Kok

From a childhood love for art to studying in France and returning to curate in Macao, this journey has spanned 18 years. For Alice, curating is more than organizing exhibitions; it is a "Mind to Mind" exchange with artists.

Her new book, "Mind to Mind: The Diverse Horizons of Macao Contemporary Art - A Selection of Curatorial Essays (2008–2025)," is not just a personal milestone. It serves as a vital historical record of Macao's contemporary art scene. The book compiles curatorial essays written over the past 18 years, documenting the creative journeys and stories of numerous local artists.

A heartfelt thank you to her mentor and friend, Dr. Ung Wai Ming, for writing the foreword, and to Architect Carlos Marreiros for his humorous and special introduction at the book launch. Deep gratitude also goes to her family, whose unwavering support has been her backbone throughout this journey.

Watch the video to hear Alice share the story behind the book and her vision for the future of Macao's art scene. 📖✨

"Mind to Mind" -- New Book by Art For All Society President Alice Kok Successfully Launched

On the afternoon of 24 January 2026, the new book launch of “Mind to Mind: The Diverse Horizons of Macao Contemporary Art – A Selection of Curatorial Essays (2008-2025)” by Alice Kok, organized by the Art For All Society (AFA Macau) and sponsored by the Macao Cultural Development Fund, was successfully held at the historic Livraria Portuguesa in Macao. The event attracted over fifty guests, including cultural figures, artists, scholars, media representatives, and members of the public. Distinguished attendees included Mr. Cheng Yan Xi, Representative of the Publicity, Culture and Sports Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Mr. Leong Fu Wa, Director of the Administrative and Financial Department of the Macao Cultural Development Fund of the Macao SAR Government; Mr. Tong Chong, Acting Director of the Macao Museum of Art (representing the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau); Dr. Rui Cunha, President of Fundação Rui Cunha; Mr. Lok Hei, President of the Macau Artist Society; Ms. Catarina Cottinelli, Director of Macao Delegation of Orient Foundation; Architect Carlos Marreiros, President of Albergue SCM; Professor Ung Vai Meng, Distinguished Professor of Macau University of Science and Technology; and Ms. Alice Kok, President of AFA and author of the new book. The atmosphere was vibrant and engaging.

At the launch, the author and AFA President Alice Kok shared her journey in compiling the book. She stated, “‘Mind to Mind’ is not merely a textual record of sixty-two exhibitions; it is a convergence ‘from mind to mind.’ It witnesses the growth of AFA from its humble beginnings with six members to what it is today and reflects the evolution of Macao's contemporary art ecology from its early shoots to its current flourishing state.” She emphasized that the concept of “集起名心” (collection and arising) in the Chinese title draws from Buddhist philosophy, signifying that consciousness contains seeds that can sprout given the right conditions—much like how art requires the joint nurturing of curators, artists, and the public to truly blossom.

The event was honored to feature two eminent figures in Macao's arts and culture scene—renowned architect and artist Carlos Marreiros and renowned artist, scholar and curator Professor Ung Vai Meng—as special guests. Both mentors to Alice Kok and contributors of the book's preface, they highlighted the publication's significance during a dialogue session. They praised the book for systematically documenting nearly two decades of curatorial practice and theoretical reflection in Macao's contemporary art, filling a gap in local publications and providing an invaluable “artistic map” for studying the region's art development.

Professor Ung Vai Meng shared, “From our collaboration on the ‘Inward Gazes’ art project in 2005 to now, I have witnessed Alice's growth from a young artist into a mature curator and institutional leader. This book is a crystallization of her professional journey and a vessel for the collective memory of Macao's art community.” Architect Carlos Marreiros added, “Curating art essentially means connecting the creativity of artists with the interpretation of the public from the curator’s perspective, truly embodying the essence of ‘Mind to Mind.’”

“Mind to Mind” compiles highlights from sixty-two exhibitions curated by Alice Kok between 2008 and 2025, including curatorial essays, exhibition and artwork images, and contextual materials, organized thematically into sections such as “Self-Exploration and Identity,” “Social Care and the Spirit of the Times,” “Art Environment and Artistic Talents,” and “Curatorial Blueprints and Cross-Disciplinary Practices.” The book stands as both a personal professional milestone and a crucial archive for observing the evolution of contemporary art in Macao.

A book signing session followed the launch, with an enthusiastic response from readers who engaged in close exchange with the author. The new book launch was organized by the Art For All Society and sponsored by the Macao Cultural Development Fund. The book is now available for purchase at Livraria Portuguesa and selected bookstores. For inquiries, please call (853) 6240 7788, email [email protected], or visit www.afamacau.com.

AFA announced that it will continue to promote the publication and research of local art documentation within the year, with plans to organize related sharing sessions and guided reading activities to deepen public understanding and engagement with Macao's contemporary art.

Alice Kok’s New Book Bridges the Minds of Artists and the Public, Mapping the Essential Landscape of Macau Art (2008-2025)

“Mind to Mind”, a collection of essays on 62 exhibitions curated by Alice Kok, will be presented at the Livraria Portuguesa on January 24th.

The Livraria Portuguesa is set to host the launch event for Alice Kok’s new book on January 24th. Titled “Mind to Mind – The Diverse Horizons of Macao Contemporary Art: A Selection of Curatorial Essays (2008-2025)”, the work gathers a collection of essays regarding 62 exhibitions inaugurated in Macau between 2008 and 2025, all curated by the president of the Art for All Society (AFA).

The title “Mind to Mind” serves as a mirror to the anthology's purpose: connecting the minds of artists with the minds of the audience through a bridge formed by Alice Kok’s curation. The work itself “is, in truth, a collection of minds,” the curator explains in conversation with Ponto Final.

The Chinese title expands on this idea by utilizing an expression of Buddhist origin which, simply put, signifies that the mind possesses the capacity to accumulate “seeds” and manifest them into concrete actions and experiences once the right conditions arise. In the context of this metaphor, Alice Kok is the fundamental driving force uniting the “seeds” of art that have sprouted in the territory over nearly two decades with a public thirsty for knowledge. “The English title, therefore, refers to the way I connect different people and create a channel of communication through art.”

The book’s broad temporal coverage allows readers to follow the artistic transformations that have occurred in Macau over the last 18 years, a period when AFA was still taking its first steps and the public’s relationship with art was much more modest. “When AFA was founded, it had only six members, and now it has 80,” notes the curator. The association “grew exponentially” during this period, keeping pace with the vibrant rhythm of an increasingly cosmopolitan, artistic, and international city.

At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, “the cultural industry was just beginning” to take shape. “We made a great effort, and that effort is currently revealing itself”—not only in the number of exhibitions and cultural initiatives unfolding across the city’s art spaces but also in terms of artistic appreciation. “We have evolved a lot in terms of dissemination and the professionalisation of art. The public is now more accustomed to Macau having exhibitions every week.”

In looking back at Macau’s art, it is inevitable to also contemplate her own evolution as an artist. “The first exhibition I organized was in 2008, when James Chu, the founding member of AFA, invited me to curate his solo exhibition. At the time, I didn't really know what to do,” she confesses with a laugh.

That initial insecurity gave way to an experienced and self-assured artist who has dedicated the last 18 years to exploring art theory and observing how it metamorphoses within the specific context of Macau. It is an evolution that she believes will also be perceptible to the book’s readers: “I would say the more recent texts are better, as I have strived to become better and better.”

With the exception of “two or three texts” left aside, the anthology aggregates practically all the works she has participated in throughout her career. And these are not just curatorial texts: “I also plan the entire exhibition, including funding and the conceptual proposal, choosing the artist, working with the artworks, preparing promotions… It is a whole process that I wanted to immortalize in the book, as if to mark the achievement of a milestone.” Consequently, the most challenging part of editing the book was not selecting the texts, but dividing them into different thematic chapters.

“From the beginning, when I wrote the proposal for this book, I decided I wanted to separate the texts into different categories,” she clarifies, hesitating on the last word. “Not categories: orientations. Different contexts, such as ‘personal growth’, ‘social care’, a section dedicated to women, another on collective exhibitions regarding the development of art in Macau…”

Special Participation of Two Mentors

Although the event at Livraria Portuguesa features a presentation by the author herself, there is also space for the intervention of two special guests: Carlos Marreiros and Ung Vai Meng. More than just two prominent figures in Macau’s arts and culture, they are, from a more personal perspective, mentors of immense importance to Alice Kok’s artistic development.

Ung Vai Meng’s mentorship dates back to 2005, when the painter held the position of director of the Macao Museum of Art (MAM). “It was he who gave me the opportunity to help coordinate an art project at the museum called ‘Inward Gaze’,” she recalls. It was a national performance art project commissioned by Ung Vai Meng himself, in which all awarded artists were entitled to participate in a one-month exchange program in France.

“Since I had just graduated from an art school in France, I was invited to coordinate this program. It was very important for my career, and I have always been grateful for the opportunity,” she acknowledges, stressing that this first contact consolidated into a mentorship relationship essential to her own growth as an artist—and to the development of AFA later on.

“I view him very much as my main mentor; a highly regarded curator and artist whose work I admire immensely. So, for this occasion where I wrote a book after 18 years of work, of course, I thought of him. Since he wrote the preface to my book, I invited him to come to the launch to share his ideas with the audience.”

Regarding the professional relationship and friendship with Carlos Marreiros, it all began with an invitation to join the second edition of ARTFEM 2020 – The International Women Artists Biennale of Macau. An initiative that, it is worth noting, was unprecedented globally: to date, it continues to hold the title of the only international biennale dedicated exclusively to women artists.

Alice Kok relates that since then, the architect has followed the development of her path and clarified doubts that arise along the way, in a dynamic that almost resembles that of a student and teacher. “He has watched me grow throughout all these years, and we still meet very frequently when I have questions. He teaches me a lot.”

Having finished reflecting on the last two decades, Alice Kok now dares to guess what lies beyond the horizon in the coming years. Just as she recognizes the role of older and more experienced artists in building her artistic identity, she believes that the future of art lies in precisely the same strategy—mentorship, advice, and support for young people who are still only considering a potential future in art.

“Our professional development must continue with an educational mission. We need to help younger people view art as a substantial professional choice,” contributing to the region's creative fabric continuing to strengthen from generation to generation. “When we talk about art and culture, we are not talking about a short-term achievement or a commercial investment. It is something long-term, like planting a tree—and the secret is for more experienced artists to help the younger ones flourish.”
