August 2026.

The Museum Frieder Burda itself becomes the subject of Raphaella Spence’s painting. For this work, the artist photographed the museum at different times of day and transformed these images into a new composition. Glass surfaces, reflections, light and architecture converge in a precisely constructed pictorial space in which interior and exterior become visible at the same time.
Like many artists associated with Photorealism, Spence works from photographic source material. Her paintings, however, are not direct copies of a single photograph. Instead, multiple perspectives merge into a new reality that appears more controlled and more detailed than the original moment itself.
Architecture has accompanied Spence since childhood. Both her father and grandfather were renowned architects. This close connection to space, structure and perspective continues to shape her work today.
On view in “Rivaling Reality. 60 Years of Photorealism” at the Museum Frieder Burda until August 2, 2026.
