In the summer of 1920, Henri Matisse spent time in Étretat in France, a small fishing village that had drawn Courbet and Monet before him. Under the overcast northern sky, he swapped the vivid warmth of his Nice palette for something quieter and more contemplative: the light, cool and diffuse, makes the room, the beach and the sea all part of the same luminous whole. 🐚

Would you step into Matisses painting and spend a holiday in Étretat? 🌊

143 years ago today, Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil, France. Alongside Pablo Picasso in the ateliers of Paris, Braque was one of the driving forces behind one of the most radical movements in art history: Cubism. His still lifes of guitars, pipes and newspapers became laboratories for a new visual language, breaking forms and multiplying perspectives all at once. What a great artist to be part of our collection – happy birthday!🥳

What happens when Picasso trades his brush for a pair of scissors?  ✂️

„Diurnes“ (1962) is an artist’s book born from the creative exchange between Pablo Picasso, photographer André Villers, and poet Jacques Prévert, published by the Galerie Berggruen in Paris. The large-format folio features 36 photographic prints, each uniquely enhanced by Picasso’s intricate scissor-cuttings. These layered designs create a striking sense of Surrealistic three-dimensionality, further enriched by Prévert’s poetic introduction.

Have you ever spotted the two ‘United Enemies’ sculptures by Thomas Schütte behind the Museum Berggruen?

They are located in the Bettina Berggruen Garden, which remains accessible during the current renovation work. The two sculptures, consisting of four figures, convey a sense of both division and unity. Do the united enemies seem trapped together, or are they merely part of one divided soul?

In spring 1938 the motif of the c**k appeared repeatedly in Pablo Picassos work. In this pastel, the bird looks ready to fight, its wings are stretched out full span. In response to the question what the c**k was supposed to mean Picasso replied: „C**ks have always existed. It’s only a question of discovering them, and the rest of life too.“
