Finissage tonight from 4 – 9 pm

Simon Hehemann
windy room

Schweidnitzer Str 17, 10709 Berlin

Worn picture frames, fragments of thoughts, proximity and distance in blur, traces and paths made visible in infinite repetition, retraced. Everything is always connected, everything is always in motion – the wind can rustle, rage, caress; the wind can sweep, subside, whisper, turn, and endlessly return. Simon Hehemann describes the starting point of this abstraction as the moment in an open field when the inner and the outer are free to roam.

[...]

In a small-format series reminiscent of Fluxus artist Robert Filliou, for example, a set of sticky notes becomes the focus. The artist stored the block of notes in his motorcycle case during rides, and through vibrations and metallic abrasion, they darkened, creating a kind of seismographic vibration drawing that captures and holds the movement itself. Other works amalgamate with extreme precision the most delicate structures made from glass, crumpled paper marbles, or plant seeds – all held, connected, and pursued through threads, wires, and mirrors.

For the exhibition windy room at Galerie Kai Erdmann, Simon Hehemann constructed a space-within-a-space using a well-tested system of perforated panels. A series of fans reverses the accustomed order of interior and exterior, carrying the wind into the exhibition space, where it is directed into precise pathways to set various elements swaying and rising and falling. Approximately 500 thin steel pins, tipped with small paper spheres crafted from drawings, evoke a field swaying in the wind.
