ALCHEMISTS
Pond Society
November 7 - December 17, 2024

See the latest group exhibition ALCHEMISTS curated by Irina Stark in the newly inaugurated space of Pond Society.
ALCHEMISTS, a group exhibition of nine contemporary women artists, all of whom, through diverse mediums and styles, challenge conventional storytelling and offer new perspectives on how narrative can be conveyed beyond literal representation.

The show celebrates the transformative power of abstraction and the innovative ways these artists turn the intangible into the visible.
The exhibition takes its title from Paulo Coelho’s eponymous book The Alchemist, which delves into the transformative journey of Santiago, the shepherd boy who dares to pursue his Personal Legend, - an individual’s purpose and destiny in life. Pursuing one’s Personal Legend is highlighted as an essential task as it encourages us to live authentically, follow our dreams, and bring a deep sense of satisfaction and meaning to life.

Final days to see

Drowning

Conny Maier’s second solo exhibition with the gallery extended until November 9, 2024.

For Maier, the metaphor of drowning—whether depicted literally or gestured towards— signifies the overwhelming nature of disaster, whether personal, political, or ecological. Yet, within this turmoil, she also finds the potential for renewal: the possibility of emerging from the depths reborn, cleansed, and transformed.

Opening hours:
Monday to Saturday 10am - 6pm

Interview with Tina Braegger about her most recent show and first time solo presentation in Asia, It’s Not Looking Good for You, at Duarte Sequeira in Seoul, South Korea.

The dancing bear has long been removed from its natural habitat of psychedelia through your practice, and Scott Young is curious to hear if the process of presenting this work in Seoul has opened up any new contextual concerns for her.

Science/Fiction — A Non-History of Plants
MEP, Maison Européenne de la photographie, Paris
Opening tomorrow, October 16, 2024

In development since 2020, the exhibition Science/Fiction — A Non-History of Plants retraces the visual history of plants through art, technology, and science from the nineteenth century to the present day. Bringing together over 40 artists from different periods and nationalities, this exhibition juxtaposes historic photographic works.

Transcending the normative divisions between fiction and reality, science and art, the artists in this exhibition go beyond rigid categories to capture the complexity of plant life and our relationship with plants. It offers an opportunity to explore the special relationship between photography and video, two techniques for capturing images that were first used for scientific research, and plants. Paradoxically, instead of creating a distance between us and the natural world, these photographic and cinematic processes have highlighted plants’ subjectivity, intelligence, and expressive capacity, compensating for our ‘anthropocentric myopia’.

Opening tomorrow, October 9, 2024

Lu Yangs film DOKU – The Self is part of ‘目 Chine, A new generation of artists’ at Centre Pompidou, Paris.

This collective exhibition shines a spotlight on the upcoming contemporary Chinese art scene with works by 21 artists, drawing a subjective portrait for the first time in France. The opening of China to the world, environmental upheavals and the transformation of lifestyles in Chinese society are all topics that have been addressed in the contemporary creative output by this young generation of artists, born in the late 1970s through to the early 1990s, as China experienced a great economic boom.

Under the theme of the character 目 (mù), meaning “eye”, with reference both to vision and the eye’s capacity to organise reality, the rich selection of works picked out by the Sino-French curators covers a broad spectrum of practices — video, painting, sculpture, installations, photography and new media — with emphasis on creations in recent years.

For Luminex 3.0 Petra Cortright created an environment that encourages dreams and serenity. Inspired by the Channel Islands of Santa Barbara and the Sea of Flowers in the book of Narnia, Cortright creates a surrealist landscape that resonates deeply with the theme of escapism. By appealing to urban audiences, Cortright encourages viewers to immerse themselves in the work where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur. The emphasis on beauty, optimism, and possibility in this piece provides a refreshing contrast to urban life.
