Esther Schipper

Esther Schipper Gallery for contemporary art

Berlin | Paris | Seoul 서울 Esther Schipper founded the gallery in 1989 in Cologne. In 1997 the gallery relocated to Berlin.

Through more than three decades of continuous exhibition practice, the gallery has established itself as a major force not only in Germany but in an international context, with offices in Paris and Seoul and representatives in France, Spain, the United States, Latin America, South Korea, Taiwan and China. The gallery holds up to ten gallery exhibitions as well as multiple off-site projects each ye

ar and participates in leading art fairs across the globe. From the very first exhibitions the gallery specialized on establishing institutional support and finding markets for radically experimental and time-based works. Building on the early pioneering program—among them, exhibitions and projects with Angela Bulloch, Liam Gillick, General Idea, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Pierre Huyghe, Ugo Rondinone or Philippe Parreno, all of whom continue to be an integral part of the gallery’s program—Esther Schipper’s long-term commitment to artists has always been at the center of her gallery’s work. Currently representing 46 artists and estates, during the last thirty years, the gallery has continuously expanded on the initial core to include innovative artists whose work spans across a wide range of media. The most recent additions are Rosa Barba, Simon Fujiwara, and Jac Leirner, Etienne Chambaud, Cemile Sahin, Sarah Buckner, and Sojourner Truth Parsons. Esther Schipper is committed to present groundbreaking exhibitions with especially commissioned works that often mark novel territories, precipitate important conceptual departures, and initiate new bodies of works. The archive documenting all gallery’s exhibitions since its founding in 1989 can be found on the Esther Schipper website.

Esther Schipper is excited to share that Julius von Bismarck’s work ‚The First, the Last, Eternity‘ is now on view at Frankfurt Airport in the check-in hall of Terminal 3.

The three ring-shaped sculptures, with diameters of 3, 5 and 7 metres, consist of a total of 636 individual coloured aluminium discs that rotate continuously, constantly changing the perception of the installation. The limited imagination of humans and the shifting of boundaries are addressed: ‘What once seemed like a crazy theory is now an integral part of what we call reality. Which, incidentally, also applies to flying.’

Esther Schipper is delighted to participate at Loop Barcelona with a solo presentation by Julius von Bismarck.

Through November 20, 2025
📍 Almanac Hotel, Room 110

On view will be Calle 22, a video work documenting the varied nocturnal life along the southern side of the street ‘Calle 22’ in Bogotá. With a high-speed camera and a spotlight Julius von Bismarck shot over 2500 frames per second to capture the road’s landscape at night in a single uninterrupted shot. Condensed to a 40 minutes slow-motion film it appears as a nearly frozen scenery, leading from the prosperous parts of the city to its poorer quarters, Calle 22 exposes Bogotá’s urban development within a limited space and time. Produced in collaboration with the local community, the film premiered in a cinema located in Calle 22.

Parreno’s Marquees are unique pieces, individual in their form, light effect and construction. The artist’s Marquees combine lighting techniques that are almost a thing of the past (such as incandescent bulbs and neon tubes) with modern acrylics that are milled, shaped and formed according to the latest fabrication methods.

Currently on view at Art Basel Paris

Esther Schipper is pleased to announce Merikokeb Berhanu’s first exhibition with the gallery, during gallery weekend Berlin . On view will be three new paintings.
May 2 - May 31, 2025
Merikokeb Berhanu’s work combines abstract and representational elements, forging a distinct formal vocabulary. Her biomorphic imagery evokes associations with life: Rounded shapes invoke cells, buds, seed pods, or embryonic life, suggesting processes of conception, gestation, reproduction, or birth – underlying themes that are more intuited than stated. A circular form recalls celestial bodies such as sun or moon, but can also be positioned as a figure’s head, organ or, in a formal vocabulary that powerfully destabilizes our sense of scale, even as a cellular structure. References to animal life bespeak an understanding of the connectedness of all life-forms. Merikokeb Berhanu, Untitled XCIX, 2025, acrylic on canvas, 182.88 x 243.84 cm. Esther Schipper is pleased to announce Romantic Room, an exhibition by Sun Yitian with all new paintings, during gallery weekend Berlin . This is Sun’s third project with the gallery, following her exhibition in Paris and a presentation at Berlin’s Niche space, both in 2023, the year she joined the program.
 May 2- May 31, 2025
Sun Yitian is best known for her paintings of monumentally enlarged mass-produced objects: Generally based on staged photographs taken by the artist herself, inflatable toys or severed doll heads—both frequent motifs—are lovingly rendered in colorful acrylic paint. Romantic Room continues Sun Yitian’s multi-layered approach to understanding what an image is and can be in contemporary painting. The paintings explore her personal history, intertwined with cultural and societal changes in China, through the country’s image worlds, as well as by how Western culture has been depicted in Chinese everyday life. For this exhibition, the artist draws on imagery from art history, mass-produced consumer objects and toys, amusement parks, but also on childhood memories and observations from daily urban life.
