THE WALL MUSEUM AT EAST SIDE GALLERY is located at the southern end of the famous East Side Gallery in a former warehouse building, the Mühlenspeicher, next to the Oberbaumbrücke off the Spree river. The innovative, multimedia museum is unique both in its contents and its presentation, showcasing the history of the Wall, from the construction of the Berlin Wall to the historic events leading to th

e fall of the Wall. The museum also offers a special focus on the decisive events in the dramatic weeks in summer and fall 1989, enabling visitors from both Germany and abroad to experience the history of the fall of the Berlin Wall first-hand – and how this deadly monument was overcome that separated the world for almost four decades into East and West. The exact moment the spark caught fire. 🕯️

4 September 1989: Demonstrators step out of Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche and unroll a handwritten banner: “For an open country with free people.” Plainclothes Stasi agents immediately rush in to tear it down—unaware that Western cameras are rolling.
Broadcast worldwide that evening, these archival scenes captured the very first Monday Demonstration. Just nine weeks later, this peaceful movement brought down the Berlin Wall.
Peaceful change begins with the courage to speak up.

4. September 1989: Nach dem Friedensgebet in der Leipziger Nikolaikirche entrollen Bürger ein Transparent: „Für ein offenes Land mit freien Menschen.“
Stasi-Mitarbeiter in Zivil greifen sofort zu und reißen es herunter – direkt vor den laufenden Kameras westlicher Reporter.
Diese historischen Bilder gingen um die Welt und markieren den Beginn der legendären Montagsdemonstrationen. Nur neun Wochen später brachten diese mutigen Menschen die Berliner Mauer zu Fall.

Diese Woche durften wir Daniele und seine Freundin Alice aus Palermo bei uns begrüßen! Für Alice war es die Premiere, für Daniele bereits der 3. Besuch (2019, 2024 und 2026).
Was ihn immer wieder begeistert?
* 🛋️ Das DDR-Wohnzimmer: Das Gefühl, direkt in den Alltag der damaligen Zeit einzutauchen.
* 🎶 Gänsehaut-Momente: Die Erinnerung an 2024, als sein bester Freund bei den Klängen von Pink Floyd in der Ausstellung zu Tränen gerührt war.
Grazie, Daniele & Alice – danke für eure Treue über all die Jahre!

From 2019 to 2026: Why One Visitor Keeps Coming Back to the Wall

This week, we welcomed back Daniele and his girlfriend Alice from Palermo, Italy! While it was Alice’s first visit, it was Daniele’s third time walking through our doors (2019, 2024, and 2026).
What keeps bringing him back?
* 🛋️ The GDR Living Room: Stepping back in time to imagine how everyday people truly lived behind the Wall.
* 🎶 Music & Emotion: Remembering his 2024 visit, when his best friend was moved to tears listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall echo through the exhibition.

Freedom was more important than fear

Just eleven days after the Berlin Wall was erected, 24-year-old tailor Günter Litfin attempted to escape to West Berlin by swimming across the Humboldthafen. Meters from reaching safety, East German border guards opened fire. Günter was fatally struck, becoming the first person killed by gunfire at the Berlin Wall. His death revealed the harsh reality of the border regime to the entire world. Today, we remember his courage and honor all those who risked everything in the pursuit of freedom.

Freiheit war wichtiger als die Angst

Nur elf Tage nach dem Bau der Berliner Mauer versuchte der 24-jährige Schneider Günter Litfin, durch Schwimmen über den Humboldthafen nach West-Berlin zu fliehen.

Nur wenige Meter vom rettenden Ufer entfernt eröffneten DDR-Grenzsoldaten das Feuer. Günter wurde tödlich getroffen und war damit der erste Mensch, der an der Berliner Mauer durch Schüsse getötet wurde.

Sein Tod machte der ganzen Welt die grausame Realität des Grenzregimes bewusst. Heute erinnern wir uns an seinen Mut und ehren all jene, die im Streben nach Freiheit alles riskierten.
