Seit 2020 bietet die Konzertreihe The Art of the Duo eine spannende Mischung aus experimentellen und intensiven musikalischen Dialogen. Lokale Musiker:innen treten in den Dialog mit internationalen Gästen. Das Duo ist eine intime, fragile und spannende Form des musikalischen Zusammenspiels, es entstehen temporäre Klangexperimente, Dialoge, Zwiegespräche, parallele Entwicklungen, dreidimensionale Klanggebilde.

In Rahmen dessen lädt am 7.11. um 20 Uhr Johannes Haase zusammen mit Neue Stadt Kultur e.V. in die GAK ein. Zu Gast sein wird die Harfenistin Kathrin Pechlof, sie trifft auf die Bremer Musiker:innen Isabelle Raphaelis (Querflöte) und Johannes Haase (Geige).

The Art of the Duo is a concert series for improvised music that has been taking place regularly since 2020. Local musicians engage in dialogue with international guests. The duo is an intimate, fragile, and exciting form of musical interaction, giving rise to temporary sound experiments, dialogues, conversations, parallel developments, and three-dimensional sound structures.

As part of this series, Johannes Haase and Neue Stadt Kultur e.V. invite you to the GAK on November 7 at 8 pm. The guest will be harpist Kathrin Pechlof, who will be joined by Bremen musicians Isabelle Raphaelis (flute) and Johannes Haase (violin).

„Der Waagenrat“ ist der erste Akt eines ungeschriebenen Theaterstücks. Zugleich ist die Performance Aktivierung der gleichnamigen Installation, die Miriam Stoney im Rahmen von „Unter dem Gewicht atmest du anders“ zeigt. In sowohl Installation als auch Performance spielt Miriam Stoney mit Ungleichgewichten in unterschiedlichen Kontexten: Mit Wortspielen und Doppeldeutigkeiten, Doppelbödigkeiten und Ambivalenzen, Fehl/Übersetzungen und Missverständnissen.

„Council of Scales“ is the first act of an unwritten theater play. At the same time, the performance functions as an activator for the installation of the same name which Miriam Stoney presents in „You Breathe Differently Under the Weight“. In both, installation and performance, Miriam Stoney uses imbalances in different scenarios: as plays on words/puns and ambiguities, ambivalences, mistranslations and misunderstandings.

Eröffnungsvortrag

Prekarisierung, die Unsicherheit von Arbeit und Leben, ist im Neoliberalismus für viele normal geworden. Seit Jahrzehnten verlagert sich die soziale Sicherheit in die Eigenverantwortung des Einzelnen. Ebenso ist Verschuldung normal geworden. Wenn immer weniger planbar ist, kann Verschuldung dann tatsächlich die Zukunft sichern, oder engt sie vor allem die Gegenwart ein? Wie werden wir durch Schulden prekär und regierbar? Und wie können Schuldverhältnisse umgekehrt werden? Wie könnte ein anderes demokratisches Zusammenleben aussehen, das auf Sorge und gegenseitiger Verbundenheit beruht?

Der Vortrag findet auf deutsch statt und wird simultan ins Englische übersetzt.

Under neoliberalism, precarization, the insecurity of work and life, has become normal for many people. For decades, social security has been shifting to the individual’s own responsibility. And how can debt relations be turned around? What might a different democratic coexistence look like, one based on care and mutual connectedness?

Unter dem Gewicht atmest du anders Ausstellung / Exhibition  07.06.–07.09.

Die Auswirkungen von Schulden werden häufig von finanziellen Abstraktionen und moralischer Aufladung überdeckt. Die Gruppenausstellung und das Symposium verschieben die Perspektive und untersuchen, wie sich Verbindlichkeiten in Körpern und Beziehungen ebenso wie Umgebungen und Infrastrukturen materialisieren:
Die Beiträge des Symposiums verfolgen entlang der Knotenpunkte „Körper“, „Ökologien“ und „Infrastrukturen“ die Bedeutung von Eigentum, Wert und Zins/Interesse als parallele Momente von Schulden und Kunst seit der Moderne.
Die Ausstellung führt künstlerische Formen des Close reading (aufmerksames Lesen) von Materialien und Narrativen zusammen, um entlang der thematischen Linien Repräsentation, Extraktion und Möglichkeiten des Sich-Entziehens den Spuren nachzugehen, die Schulden und ihre operative Macht an ihnen hinterlassen.

The impact of debt is often obscured by financial abstractions and moral charge. The group exhibition and symposium shift the perspective to an exploration of how liabilities materialize in bodies an relationships, as well as environments and infrastructures:

The symposium examines debt’s diachronic resonances through topical junctures: „Bodies,“ „Ecologies,“ and „Infrastructures“ provides connective instances and points of departure for situated analyses of how property, value, and interest as structures of both debt and art since the becoming of modernity. In the exhibition, close readings of materials and narratives are brought together along the lines of representation, extraction and withdrawal to explore the residues of debt and its operational power.

Schulden sind tief eingeschrieben in unsere Gesellschaften. Sie wirken sich wirtschaftlich ebenso wie politisch, sozial und kulturell in lokalen und globalen, zwischenmenschlichen und ökologischen Beziehungen aus. Das Symposium “DEBT. Unsettling Matters of Interest” und die Gruppenausstellung “Unter dem Gewicht atmest du anders” widmen sich diesen vielfältigen Verbindlichkeiten und ihren Materialisierungen in Kunst, visueller Kultur und alltäglichen Lebenswelten. Der Blick auf die konkreten Effekte von Schulden lässt ihren Einfluss greifbar werden und eröffnet gleichzeitig alternative Denk- und Handlungsräume.

Eine Kooperation zwischen GAK, Institut für Kunstwissenschaft - Filmwissenschaft - Kunstpädagogik / Universität Bremen, Institut für Kunst und visuelle Kultur / Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg sowie „Temporary Spaces“ / Hochschule für Künste Bremen.

Debt is deeply engrained in our societies. It operates economically and politically, as well as socially and culturally within local and global, interpersonal, and ecological relationships. The international symposium “DEBT. Unsettling Matters of Interest” and the group exhibition “Under the Weight You Breathe Differently” jointly explores these manifold liabilities and their material manifestations in art, visual culture, and everyday life. Focusing on the specific effects of debt allows its impact to become tangible, while opening a space for alternative forms of understanding and engagement.

A collaboration of GAK, IKFK / University of Bremen, IKVK / Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, and „Temporary Spaces“ / HFK University of the Arts Bremen.

Erosion Arranged: we sink, I stretch, you flow

Monique S. Desto und Klaartje van Essen teilen ein Interesse an Spuren und Abformungen, Abrieb und Auflösung. Destos vorrangiges Medium ist die Malerei. Als Material nutzt Desto Latex, das sich beim Malen anschmiegt, Reliefs ausbildet und sich sukzessive zersetzt, wenn es ausgestellt wird. Van Essen arbeitet skulptural, hauptsächlich mit Gips und Wachs sowie mit Formen, die sie oder andere bereits benutzt haben und erweitert diese Praxis wiederum ins Zeichnerische. Ausgangspunkt der Annäherung, die Desto und van Essen in „Erosion Arranged“ vollziehen, sind die Räumlichkeiten der GAK: ursprünglich als Speicher gebaut, spannen sich die Arbeiten zwischen Boden und Decke, Geschichte und Gegenwart in den Raum und die Bedingungen des von Wasser umflossenen Gebäudes ein.

Monique S. Desto and Klaartje van Essen share an interest in traces and moldings, friction and dissolution. Desto’s primary medium is painting. Desto uses latex as a material, which adapts to the surface when painted, forms reliefs and successively decomposes when exhibited. Van Essen works sculpturally, mainly with plaster and wax as well as with forms that she or others have already used, and extends this practice into drawing. The starting point for the approach that Desto and van Essen take in „Erosion Arranged“ is the space of the GAK: originally built as a warehouse, the works span between floor and ceiling, past and present into the space and conditions of the building surrounded by water.
