You can contribute to a shared woven work that grows and changes over the course of the exhibition. Individual threads are connected, existing connections can be extended, or new ones can be tied. In this way, the collective act of weaving takes up a question that runs throughout the exhibition: How can something new emerge from separation and f

LOOKING AT WHITES – FROM THE JULIUS LIPS COLLECTION with Anna Brus

💥 15 October, 6:30 pm, return stage, 🔗r-e-t-u-r-n.net

“All it takes to caricature an oppressor is to portray him exactly as he is.” - Julius Lips, 1937

For one evening, six rarely shown sculptures will come out of storage and return to view.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Julius Lips (1895–1950), then director of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, assembled an extraordinary collection: representations of Europeans made by people living under European colonial rule.

Suddenly, Europeans become the ones being looked at: colonisers, missionaries and traders – observed and represented by those upon whom Europe had directed its colonial gaze.

Forced to leave Germany by the National Socialists, Lips went into exile in the United States, where he published his research in 1937 under the provocative title The Savage Hits Back.

✨ In the context of r e t u r n, we join Anna Brus, a specialist on Julius Lips and his collection, in looking closely at six sculptures that are rarely shown to the public.

Here, the gaze returns. It hits back. And it hits the museum itself – its history of collecting, looking and classifying.

What do we see when those who were made the objects of the European gaze look back?

⏱️ 3 October | 2 – 3:30 pm | return stage

At the heart of the event is the launch of Tahmineh Rostami’s new book, Persian in the Suitcase. Exploring heritage language, multilingualism, memory, and belonging, the book reflects on how migrant families carry language and cultural experiences across generations.

This is more than a conventional book launch. It is an intimate afternoon of reading, personal storytelling and conversation, offering space to reflect on what we inherit, what we carry with us, and how language can connect generations, places and identities.

FREUDESTREIK! – A Performance by InterFemme e.V.*
⏱️ 3 October | 4 – 6 pm

The crises are real. We’re going on strike anyway. War, the climate crisis, rising rents, constant stress, bad news every few minutes. We read it, we feel it – and sometimes we no longer know what to do with the fear, the anger and the exhaustion.

That’s exactly what FREUDESTREIK is about. In our performance, we strike against what crises do to us: exhaustion, powerlessness, the endless pressure to keep functioning, and the quiet rules that tell us what a “good life” is supposed to look like.

Come by and join the joyful strike! InterFemme* e.V

hn. lyonga hn. lyonga is a Black, Q***r, interdisciplinary artist. He was born and raised in rural Cameroon and today lives and works in Berlin.

His work is the work of gathering words and neighbours. His work looks at migration.

Those journeys born of dispossession and yet marked by invention that continue to shape the lives of the colonised, themarginalised.

He is a neighbor, and always a student. lyonga sits among the members of BARAZANI.berlin – Forum Kolonialismus und Widerstand, Black Artists NRW and the Field Narratives collective, where the work is remembering and refusing, where rural biographies, ancestral speech, and cross-continental intimacies find new forms.

He was formerly the neighbour in residence at the Gropius Bau, Berlin and a Human Machine Fellow at E-Werk Lückenwalde and Akademie Der Künste, Berlin.
