Claudia van Koolwjik 1961-2023 regarded the world with an open, questioning and curious mind. Her thirst for knowledge and her joy in discovery are reflected in her works. Alongside her
art, she also studied biology, collected forms,
explored plants and drew on art history to transform her wonderful photographs and textile works into symbols brimming with joie de vivre and a profound sense of life.

We are delighted to be able to present a small selection of her extraordinary works in the exhibition

In this exhibition, Anke Lohrer combines an analogue book wheel, AI-generated videos and analogue artist’s books to create a shared space for reflection.

Here you can see the book wheel.
I can display several of my artist’s books at the same time – like tabs in a browser, but in analogue form. This concept, originally developed by Italian architect and engineer Agostino Ramelli in the 16th century, is regarded as a predecessor of modern e-readers. Over time, it has inspired various projects, including Daniel Libeskind’s ‘Reading Machine’ at the 1986 Architecture Biennale and replicas by students at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. There are still around 14 historical book wheels in existance worldwide, including in Puebla, Mexico, Naples and Wolfenbüttel. Anke Lohrer’s book wheel was crafted by an artisan and engineer in northern Germany. It combines historical engineering and contemporary book art in a single object.

What alchemy and advances in the use of AI have in common is their origin in the human need for knowledge and wonder.

'Of the Sun and the Moon' is an exhibition about this sense of wonder. In her video installation 'Zwischen Anschlag und Algorithmus' (Between Impetus and Algorithm), the artist Anke Lohrer deliberately explores the oscillation between the analogue and AI.

The historic Olivetti typewriter machine serves as an anchor between the past and the present. Meanwhile, the video installation plays AI-generated videos on a continuous loop.

“In the art exhibition, I combine an analogue book wheel, AI-generated videos and analogue artist’s books to create a collective space for contemplation, says Anke Lohrer. ‘Between paper, light and movement, a machine explores the memory of the world. The installation demonstrates how memory is altered through machine interpretation. It poses the question: to whom does history belong when machines begin to remember it? What remains is a fragile balance between human memory and technical reconstruction.’

Anke Lohrer ist going to speak about the multilayered dimension of her installation in the upcoming Artist Talk, on 28 March 2026 | 3 pm. Don't miss it!
We appreciate your prior registration until 27 March.

ARCHIVIO PAOLO COSTA X GALERIE CLARA MARIA SELS
