SCHÖNEWALD is pleased to announce its new group exhibition, Between Visibility and Memory.

The exhibition brings together ten distinct artistic approaches and explores the image as an epistemic space situated between perception, materiality, and memory.
In the tension between abstraction and figuration, serial order and gestural composition, the relationship between surface and space is renegotiated.
Color functions not merely as an aesthetic phenomenon, but as a constitutive element of the pictorial structure and as a vehicle for temporal experience.
Reflection on the conditions of the visible connects the diverse artistic approaches and generations.

How can abstract models be experienced through artistic processes? As part of a university transfer project, the Kunsthalle is transforming into a chamber of wonders where interdisciplinary collaboration plays a central role. The exhibition effort + flow – Mathematics and Art in Exchange consistently pursues this approach. In cooperation with the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center Port-Hamiltonian Systems, mathematical models of energy flows and dynamic interactions are related to artistic works and used as impulses for creative research. The focus is on works that reflect principles of mathematical modeling: circulating energies, coupled forces, self-organizing fields, and interfaces between systems. Installations, objects, videos, and interactive experiments are on display. effort + flow makes the transitions between mathematical models and artistic practice visible and presents the Kunsthalle Barmen as a place where knowledge, perception, and aesthetic experience are set in motion.

Andreas Schmitten (b. 1980) is a German artist whose artistic practice encompasses sculptures, wall works, installations and drawings. His work is both seductive and cryptic. It is subtle and multidimensional, sometimes appearing objectively cool and thus artificial, sometimes playfully light, and is a work that transforms the unspoken, the imaginary and the implied into compact, self-contained, autonomous images. The artist approaches his own themes, the inner state, and those of our time with great seriousness and responsibility. His artistic practice is formulated in a timelessness that is necessary for him, with art-historical or time-based anchors, in order to question the logic of society and the individual in the here and now – the complexity of the individual works is almost physically palpable. ©️ Susanne Kleine
