🇩🇪 Den Parfüm-Spritz-Automaten Kölnisch Wasser (1953) von Georg Wiegandt & Söhne, Berlin gab es in verschiedenen Ausführungen und mit landesspezifischer Beschriftung, mit Spiegel und teilweise mit Zählwerk. Unser Exponat besitzt ein Gehäuse aus Stahlblech und ist von außen altweiß mit blauer Schrift gestaltet. Die Firma Wiegandt baute ab 1949 viele Warenautomaten, die entweder Hygieneartikel, Tabak- oder Lebensmittel wie Limonade verkauften.
🇬🇧 The perfume dispenser Kölnisch Wasser (= Eau de Cologne) (1953) by Georg Wiegandt & Söhne, Berlin, was available in various designs and with country-specific lettering, with a mirror and, in some cases, with a counting mechanism. Our exhibit has a sheet steel housing and is designed in antique white with blue lettering on the outside. From 1949 onwards, the Wiegandt company built many vending machines that sold either hygiene products, to***co or groceries such as lemonade.

The Geldbriefträger (1907) from Reinhard Hoffmann Automatenfabrik, Leipzig, is a coin slingshot that worked with the coin inserted. The 5-pfennig coin had to be flicked into the fourth prize slot. If successful, a bell rang and the Geldbriefträger appeared. This armed official was well known in the German Empire. He was sent by the Reichspost to deliver cash and pay out pensions, for example.

The TotoFix football (ca. 1950) from VEB LUMET (short for nationally owned Luckenwalde Metal Goods Factory) in Luckenwalde provided fun for two players. After the buzzer sounded, the ball automatically shot onto the playing field and then, of course, had to be kicked into the opponent's goal. To do this, players used their two field players, who could block balls and shoot them by turning quickly, and the goalkeeper, who was controlled with a pistol-like handle. The goalkeeper could not only block the balls, but also shoot them towards the opponent's goal by pressing the red button.

The game Jig Saw (1933) by Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation, Chicago, takes its name from the old name for jigsaw puzzles, as these were created using a jigsaw. In the machine shown here, this old game principle was incorporated into the pinball game. Players attempted to hit the holes with the ten balls available in order to reveal puzzle pieces or entire columns. There was no option to re-launch the balls. Only adjusting the launch strength determined the path of the balls.

After the end of the Second World War, jukeboxes became increasingly popular, also in Germany.
The biggest hits were not only heard on the radio but could also be selected directly from the jukeboxes. What was played frequently reflected what moved people.
To answer the frequently asked question of which tracks were best suited for jukeboxes, the editorial team of ‘Automatenmarkt’ asked operators for the first time in the October 1954 issue to tell them which tracks were played most frequently in the machines. The readings were made possible by a so-called popularity counter, which was installed inside the jukeboxes. From these monthly figures, the ‘top hits of the month’ – later known as the ‘hits of the month’ could be determined by reading the jukeboxes.
The Wurlitzer Lyric 74 from Deutsche Wurlitzer GmbH in Hüllhorst was launched in January 1974. In the February 1974 issue, we learn that our Wurlitzer Lyric 74 celebrated its market launch with the song “Schwarze Madonna” by Beta Illić.

The gambling machine Paris Courses (1911) by Pierre Bussoz, Paris, offered the opportunity to bet on one or two of three horses that ran their laps purely mechanically. Players bet on ‘Dandolo’ in red, ‘Vasistas’ in white or ‘Négofol’ in black by inserting a 10-centime coin into the corresponding coin slot. The game was then set in motion by turning a k**b back and forth. If the player's horse won the race, the machine paid out tokens worth 20 or 30 centimes.
