Congrats to one of our UNAPOLOGETIC BAAR Art Journey and Residency artists Sumire Skye Taniai for her story being written up in Voyage LA. During her interview she talks about trying to find community upon her moving to the Midwest at an early age and feeling as if she had to reinvent her identity.

Sumire Skye Taniai was born in Iwakuni City, Japan where it is known for the U.S. Marine base. Ever since she moved to America in grade school, Taniai has been living in the Midwest for two decades. Taniai received her BFA from the University of Missouri in 2016 and an MFA with a full-merit scholarship from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019.

Sumire Skye Taniai’s recent body of work deals with the experience of being an Asian American in this current hostile political climate. These works take on a direct response to the current racial injustices and the other side includes more of her personal experiences as a Japanese immigrant. She focuses on topics such as immigration, assimilation, Asian stereotypes, race, identity and transnationalism. Taniai believes that referencing Asian American historical events is important because these narratives are marginalized in education.

Images in the article were taken during the BAAR Art Journey exhibitions which took place in Kansas City, Missouri at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

About last night… we had the pleasure of integrating artworks from the BAAR Art Journey portfolio and a few local artists into the residential art gallery named Salon Galerie located at Villa Belvedere during the monthly invite only think tank gathering of economists, innovators, creators, scientists and investors in Berlin, Germany. It was a great crowd and introducing the artists from KC, New York, South Carolina, and other parts of Germany was an honor.

We have the pleasure of introducing artist Danielle Scott to the German market. One of her works from the Black Boy series wil be exhibited as part of the next Salon Galerie, an invite only residential exhibition which accompanies a monthly think tank inclusive of innovators, economists, creators, scientists and educators. We will introduce her wrk and share her motivation behind creating this series.

Danielle’s present body of work comes from the journey that she took over the last year, visiting places that reflect pieces of these current times, our history, and her evolving understanding of her own self. Over the past
year, the artist has been identifying and processing information pertaining to the essence of our ancestors which has always been our ancestry, lineage, our community, our stories, and ourselves.

This weekend we have the pleasure of exhibiting and introducing BAAR portfolio artists to a select group of intellectuals as part of a curated residential gallery (Salon Galerie) which accompanies a monthly think tank for intellectuals. We will expose the works of one of BAAR Art Journey’s portfolio artist Isaiah Lee to the Berlin art scene. Isaiah Lee is based in Chicago and joined us during our art scouting mission while we were in Kansas City.
