On World Mental Health Day, the GYA Statement "Science Cannot Afford to Lose a Generation" calls attention to a crisis unfolding within the institutions that produce scientific knowledge.
Nearly 30% of report elevated psychological distress, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Human Behaviour in June 2026.
Behind these figures lies a systemic challenge: short-term contracts, delayed funding decisions, unclear career progression, and inadequate institutional support are undermining the sustainability of research careers.
Supporting is not just a matter of individual well-being. It is an investment in the future of science itself.
What changes must research institutions prioritise to make scientific careers more sustainable?

Artificial intelligence ( ) can help Europe deliver more safe, high-quality per clinician and per euro – but only if it is clinically validated, transparent, cybersecure and equitable.

In response to this challenge, we have launched today a new joint EASAC-FEAM report, titled “AI in European Healthcare: Policy Recommendations for Optimising Added Value and Safe, Ethical, and Inclusive Adoption.”

Authored by 22 experts from across Europe, nominated by our respective member academies, the report provides ten science-based policy recommendations for embedding responsible AI practices into European healthcare, ensuring that AI deployment is managed proactively as part of a sustainable, anticipatory healthcare strategy, rather than merely responding to external factors such as emergencies or market inevitabilities.

In brief, the report conveys three urgent messages to European policymakers:

✅ Be proactive, not reactive: Anticipate long-term effects and embed responsibility before deployment.

✅ Put equity and trust at the centre: Prioritise equitable access, transparency, participation and sovereignty.

✅ Coordinate European action: Harmonise standards, enable interoperable cross-border data use and strengthen collaborative oversight.

“Now is the time to act, if we want to entrust our health with AI,” urges Prof. André Knottnerus, EASAC co-chair of the working group of the report. “With these recommendations, we want to help policymakers drive innovations forward safely.”
