Artist Goin unveils a striking work entitled Lady Guantanamo, symbolically created in the middle of Rue de New York in Grenoble. This powerful creation depicts the Statue of Liberty, a universal symbol of human rights, dressed in an orange prison uniform, chained and kneeling, her head in her hands.
Through this stark contrast, the work questions the current excesses of contemporary societies, where freedom is threatened, silenced and humiliated under the guise of order and security. It echoes controversial political rhetoric that jeopardises fundamental rights and denounces the systemic injustice embodied by extrajudicial detention centres.
Lady Guantanamo is not only a cry of alarm, but also a mirror held up to our societies, inviting viewers to reflect on the true meaning of freedom, justice and power.
“When freedom wears a uniform, who holds the power?
A fallen icon doesn’t scream, it shames.
Justice, corrupted. Liberty, gagged.
Empires don’t collaps, they kneel.” (Goin)
