When sixteen-year-old Erik Niedling founded the Anarchist Faction with friends after the fall of
the Wall, he longed for a life free from state control. Having been harassed by the GDR
dictatorship throughout his childhood and youth, he was unwilling to submit once again to a
predetermined state. As part of the Anarchist Faction, Niedling responded with symbolic
resistance to the East German takeover of the Federal Republic of Germany—euphemistically
termed “reunification.” His efforts proved unsuccessful, and Niedling turned first to internal, and
then to artistic, emigration.

Thomas Rentmeister’s ‚Luftzaun‘ (2020) at im Tal – Stiftung Wortelkamp Skulpturenlandschaft ›im Tal‹ — A 9 × 9 metre fence, suspended five metres above the ground, turns the familiar symbol of enclosure into an almost absurd gesture of human order and control. First presented at Stiftung Nantesbuch, the work now finds a new setting in the landscape of the Westerwald.

Oskar Schmidt’s work has accompanied the programme of Galerie Tobias Naehring for many years, and his images have always resonated with questions of memory, identity and the visual codes of a divided Germany.
I was born in 1984 and grew up in the East, just as this country was changing fundamentally. Much of my own identity is therefore inseparable from the experience of East Germany and the years that followed.
Today, on the Day of German Unity, I am grateful for the freedom that came with that change — and for the possibility of experiencing, questioning and shaping it for myself.
Perhaps this is also why Oskar’s work feels particularly close to me.

Seth Pick is a Berlin-based painter whose work moves between figuration and abstraction through layering, removal, and adjustment. His paintings from 2023–2024 bring clarity and hesitation, awkwardness and control into the same space, allowing recognisable images to emerge and recede. Gesture becomes a test of pressure, rhythm, and relationships across the surface, keeping meaning open while giving each work a strong material presence. Born in Reading in 1985, Pick studied at Goldsmiths and the Städelschule with Michael Krebber. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Kunstverein Braunschweig, Union Pacific, and Bundeskunsthalle.
