Dorothea van der Koelen (*1960) ist seit über 30 Jahren selbstständige Kunstvermittlerin aus Passion. Aufgewachsen in einem humanistisch geprägten künstlerischen Elternhaus, entschied sie sich schon vor dem Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie, Buchwissenschaft und Romanistik (an der Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz) ihr Leben und Wirken zeitgenössischer Kunst zu widmen. Mittlerweile ist sie mit

drei Galerien in Mainz und Venedig präsent und hat in über 500 Ausstellungen in mehr als 25 Ländern auf sämtlichen Kontinenten ihre kuratorischen Fähigkeiten unter Beweis gestellt und einen reichen Erfahrungsschatz gesammelt. Um diesen an nachfolgende Generationen weiterzugeben hat sie vor einigen Jahren die ›van der Koelen Stiftung für Kunst und Wissenschaft‹ gegründet. Sie eroberte mit ihren Künstlern den öffentlichen Raum, hat zahlreiche Kunst-am-Bau-Projekte realisiert und wurde zur Schnittstelle zwischen Kunstmarkt und wissenschaftlicher Forschungsarbeit. Gleichzeitig ließ sie nichts unversucht, um Kunst für das breite Publikum zu kommunizieren und realisierte zahlreiche Kooperationen mit Museen und öffentlichen Ausstellungsinstituten weltweit. Das bestimmt den globalen Aspekt ihrer Tätigkeit. In Vorträgen, Zeitschriften und Büchern hat sie zahlreiche Aufsätze zur zeitgenössischen Kunst publiziert und sich mit dem ›Chorus-Verlag‹ auch als Verlegerin einen Namen gemacht, mehr als 150 Publikationen zur zeitgenössischen Kunst veröffentlicht, bedeutende Œuvre-Kataloge herausgegeben und die ZEITRAUM-Zeitung für aktuelle Kunst ins Leben gerufen. Als Jurorin und Evaluatorin ist sie in zahlreichen Gremien für Stipendien, Wettbewerbe, Kunstpreise, Hochschulstrukturen etc. Die Dr. van der Koelen Consulting berät Firmen beim Aufbau ihrer Sammlung und Gestaltung ihres Marketingkonzeptes im Kunstbereich. Auch als selbständige Unternehmerin hat Dorothea van der Koelen sich Fähigkeiten erworben, ihre verschiedenen Geschäftszweige aufgebaut und Erfahrungen gesammelt. Mitglied im VdU (Verband deutscher Unternehmerinnen), in der AIDDA (dem italienischen Unternehmerinnen-Verband) und im FCEM (Femmes Chefs d’Entreprises Mondiales).

Last weekend at Cadoro – Center for Art and Science in Mainz we held the grand opening of the highly anticipated exhibition by artist Sheikh Rashid Al Khalifa – a member of the Bahraini royal family – titled 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒.

Due to current political developments in the Middle East, the artist himself was unfortunately unable to attend the opening as planned. Nevertheless, the art lovers who had traveled to the event were full of anticipation and listened intently to the opening speech by gallerist and art historian Dr. Dorothea van der Koelen, who skillfully placed Al Khalifa’s artistic stance within the context of contemporary history and the gallery’s portfolio.

◽ Known for his signature convex canvases and relief-like works in aluminum and lacquer, in 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒 Rashid Al Khalifa focuses on nuances, textures, and subtle shifts. White appears here in a multitude of gradations—warm and cool, matte and reflective, opaque and translucent—and becomes the vehicle for subtle movements 〰️

◽ The artist's works combine geometric clarity and Islamic structures with poetic sensibility, continuing exploring the myriad dynamics of light and colours that are characteristic to Bahrain’s geographical and cultural diversity.
Precisely constructed forms cast soft shadows, reflect their surroundings, or absorb light. Depending on the viewer's perspective, the effect and intensity shift—the works respond to space and architecture, actively engaging with their environment ✨

On March 14th a new exhibition will be officially opened at Cadoro – Center for Art and Science in Mainz, dedicated to the minimalist, constructive-architectonical body of work of the Bahrain artist Rashid Al Khalifa!

With 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒, the artist presents a compelling evolution of his multifaceted oeuvre. The exhibition explores the quiet 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 – not as emptiness, but as a resonating chamber for light, structure, and perception. A complex interplay of surface, shadow, and architectural precision unfolds within a consistently reduced formal language.

This exhibition is an invitation to discover silence, to meditate with the artist on the 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 – which has neither beginning nor end, representing the eternal, the divine – in contrast to the 𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 – which stands for matter and the order created by man.
To resolve these opposites, to connect them, is a metaphor for an impossible task: squaring the circle – or perhaps a possibility of approximation, of seeking points of contact, not only in geometry, but also in what is common and connects cultures.
