Installation view: Julia Selin – Sun‘s show!

“Selin approaches painting as a site where images emerge through process. Each canvas is executed in a single, continuous layer of oil, worked while still wet. The image develops through pressure and movement. Where pigment gathers, it darkens into a compact field; where it thins, light appears from within the surface. The palette moves between dense, iron-rich reds and bright passages of yellow. Heat and illumination circulate across the works…

…The hand remains close—brush and finger tracing, pressing, dragging—leaving marks that feel both deliberate and immediate. The resulting colour hovers in an unstable register, a dewy, shifting tone the artist describes as a “ghost colour.” Illumination is not applied but released, giving the impression that the image is being uncovered rather than constructed“  (Text by Karin Bähler Lavér)

Julia Selin - Sun‘s show

”In her painterly practice, Selin sustains a tension between inward, diagrammatic imagery and the direct presence of the painted surface, recalling both the symbolic structures of Hilma af Klint and the spatial clarity of Barnett Newman. The paintings remain grounded in their material conditions while opening toward something less tangible—an image that forms in the encounter and continues to shift with attention. What they offer is not a fixed statement but a sustained perceptual state, where seeing becomes a way of holding something briefly in place before it changes again.“ (Karin Bähler Lavér)

Heat and illumination circulate across the works.

The composition in several of the paintings recalls Philip Guston’s description of Piero della Francesca’s manner of dividing a painting: “The picture is sliced almost in half, yet both parts act on each other, repel and attract, absorb and enlarge, one another.”

The hand remains close—brush and finger tracing, pressing, dragging—leaving marks that feel both deliberate and immediate. The resulting colour hovers in an unstable register, a dewy, shifting tone the artist describes as a “ghost colour.” Illumination is not applied but released, giving the impression that the image is being uncovered rather than constructed…“(Full Text by Karin Bähler Lavér is available on our website)

Save The Date!

We are delighted to present Julia Selin’s debut solo exhibition in Germany!

Julia Selin (b. 1986) lives and works in Malmö. She studied at the Umeå Art Academy and the Nordic Art School Kokkola in Finland, and has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in recent years, including in New York, Copenhagen, and Stockholm.

Her work unfolds in pictorial space between landscape and abstraction, marked by a strong atmospheric density. Working with reduced, often nearly monochrome palettes, she creates environments that resist clear localization, oscillating between an external experience of nature and inner perception. These take shape as images that evoke states rather than depict landscapes. Selin’s work centers on what lies beneath the visible surface: a pressure from below, a rising of form out of depth.

Stay tuned. Opening May 7, 6–8 pm.

The exhibition brings together three groups of works from different phases in the oeuvre of Otto Piene: early Grid Paintings from the late 1950s and 1960s, Fire Paintings from the 1970s, and ceramic works in which the grid reappears as a sculptural structure.

Burned Grid: Structure, Energy, Light

6 March - 18 April 2026

The grid stands at the beginning of Otto Piene’s artistic language. In the late 1950s, as a founding member of the ZERO movement, Piene turned to the grid not as a rigid system but as a field of possibility. The early Grid Paintings transform repetition into vibration: light animates structure, and order becomes a carrier of energy. The grid is not merely compositional; it is a matrix through which immaterial phenomena—light, movement, atmosphere—enter the image.

In the works presented in the exhibition, this early structural principle re-emerges in a new material register. The ceramics revisit the logic of the grid, yet they translate it into relief, surface, and physical presence. What was once painted or punctured becomes shaped and fired. The kiln replaces the studio gesture; combustion becomes a collaborator. The grid is no longer only seen—it is touched, shadowed, and materially inscribed. In this transformation, structure acquires density without losing its openness.

This return is not nostalgic. Rather, it reveals the continuity of Piene’s thinking: structure as a vessel for energy. The Fire Paintings of the 1970s extend this trajectory. Here, flame leaves its trace directly on the surface, marking the work with smoke and heat. The controlled order of the grid encounters the unpredictable movement of fire. Yet even in these works, the principle remains consistent: light and energy are not illustrated but enacted.

Across decades and media, Piene maintains a dialogue between system and element, order and combustion. The grid provides orientation; fire introduces contingency. In the ceramics, these poles converge. The works embody a synthesis of early structural rigor and later elemental force, uniting surface and process, control and transformation.

Burned Grid thus brings into focus a continuous thread within Piene’s oeuvre: the grid as origin, the flame as activation, and light as the enduring medium that binds them.
