Taming Type: Indesign & Type Setting Workshop

Is your text acting rebelliously? Learn to tame it and set boundaries.

In this workshop, you will learn about the basics of type setting, layouts, grids, and InDesign quirks. We will discuss baseline grids, styles, type sizes, and provide some tips and tricks for layouting your text for print, as well as explore different papers. Each participant will set their own text to print a booklet, which will be bound into a group publication at the end, featuring each participant’s contribution.

All paper and printing material will be provided by us. Please bring your own text, pictures, or graphics to use within the workshop. An additional requirement is your own laptop with InDesign installed.

Mikrohandwerk (micro-craft) is parallel to neural plasticity in artistic work [gear brain]. It’s fine-attention towards learning a material through small personal tricks and hacks, sharing them again, it becomes like a highway with attention to aesthetics formed through sharing. This knowledge creates a direct connection between producer, production, and product.

In this workshop Nike Hartmond and Hansi Wimmer will explore their concept of Mikrohandwerk with participants through theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical includes reading text fragments; the practical applies craft through shared tricks.
