BETWEEN INTERIOR SPACE AND ATMOSPHERE
Johannes Rochhausen’s painting focuses on the interior as a site of perception and concentration. His studio views and still lifes depict rooms—or fragments of them—in which work is done, thoughts take shape, and seeing becomes an active process. Yet his paintings are far more than mere representations of a place.
Rochhausen invites us to enter the spaces he has traversed and transforms what is immediately seen into a realm of experience in which external reality and inner sensation converge.
Since the Early Renaissance, the interior has been understood as a pictorial space capable of expressing inner states. Rochhausen continues this tradition in a contemporary manner: his studio scenes do not simply tell of objects, but become reflections of an inner world. Working directly from observation, he uses the brush to develop pictorial spaces of quiet intensity from his immediate surroundings.
Rochhausen’s painting is defined by an extraordinary sensitivity to the finest nuances, the result of working directly from nature. Through the painter’s eye and hand, space becomes sensually tangible for the viewer: the coolness of shadow, the fine dust resting on the surfaces of things. Everyday elements such as walls and floors become experiences in themselves. Concrete space is translated into painting and transformed into a realm of experience that renders the visible sensuously perceptible.
The works presented in POOL REFLECTIONS are marked by a summery lightness. Sunlight filters through curtains and windows, settles across surfaces, and makes the warmth of the moment almost physically palpable. Furniture, plants, and studio utensils appear as elements of a quiet composition that resists any precise temporal setting. Space becomes not only an expression of concentrated looking, but also the image of a timeless moment.
