Take your time, feel the lightness, and experience color and light. This is the invitation of Rei Naito’s current Rotunda project, „Colour Beginning“.

In this reel, Michael Hering, director of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, shares his thoughts and impressions of the installation.

Free of charge in the Rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne throughout this spring and summer.

Day and night, light and darkness—lines divide the space. Details become visible, reflect, and disappear again. The gaze shifts—and with it, perception.

The second jointly curated exhibition of the four museums at the Pinakothek der Moderne is dedicated to the theme of reflection—understood as an optical phenomenon, a process of thought, and a means of artistic expression. In contrast to the first anniversary exhibition, which focused on the Modernism of the 1920s and 30s, REFLEXION extends to the present.

Under the guiding themes of light, mirror, and transparency, works from art, architecture, graphic design, and design enter into dialogue.

In addition to the exhibition spaces on the ground floor and second floor, the presentation also includes “satellites” such as the glass installation at the museum’s entrance and the window transformed into an artwork at the top of the grand east staircase.

The exhibition runs until May 31!

Tag und Nacht, Licht und Dunkelheit, Linien teilen den Raum, Details werden sichtbar, spiegeln sich, verschwinden wieder.

Der Blick wandert – und mit ihm die Wahrnehmung.
Die zweite gemeinschaftlich kuratierte Ausstellung der vier Museen in der Pinakothek der Moderne widmet sich dem Thema der Reflexion – verstanden als optisches Phänomen, Denkprozess und künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel.

Im Gegensatz zur ersten Jubiläumsausstellung, die die Moderne der 1920/30er Jahre fokussierte, reicht REFLEXION bis in die Gegenwart.

Unter den Leitmotiven Licht, Spiegel und Transparenz treten Werke aus Kunst, Architektur, Graphik und Design in Dialog. Zur Präsentation gehören neben den Ausstellungsräumen im Erdgeschoss und zweiten Obergeschoss auch „Satelliten“ wie die Glasarbeit am Eingang der Pinakothek der Moderne oder das in ein Kunstwerk verwandelte Fenster am oberen Ende der großen Treppe Ost.

Did you know that young people actively help support new acquisitions for the collections of the Pinakothek der Moderne?

This is Julius from PIN.YC, the museum’s young friends association. Alongside exhibition visits, studio tours and artist talks, the community also supports acquisitions for the museum’s collections.

Behind him: „Golem“ by Boris Saccone — the latest acquisition supported by PIN.YC and now part of the collection .

The next acquisition will support a work by Conny Maier for the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München and takes place on September 18.

Wusstet ihr, dass junge Menschen aktiv dazu beitragen, dass neue Werke in die Sammlungen der Pinakothek der Moderne kommen?

Das ist Julius vom PIN.YC – dem jungen Freundeskreis der Pinakothek der Moderne. Neben Ausstellungsbesuchen, Atelierführungen und Künstlergesprächen engagiert sich die Community auch für Ankäufe für die Sammlungen des Hauses.

Das Werk hinter ihm: der „Golem“ von Boris Saccone – der jüngste vom PIN.YC unterstützte Ankauf und jetzt Teil der Sammlung .

Der nächste Ankauf unterstützt ein Werk von Conny Maier für die Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München und findet am 18. September bei Kustermann statt.

Have you spotted it yet?

In front of the Pinakothek der Moderne — right outside the windows of the exhibition CONVIVIUM. FOOD SYSTEMS AT THE LIMIT — a summer kitchen with a large cooking island and communal dining table has appeared.

The project was designed and built by Tillmann Gebauer together with students from the seminar “Design Build CONVIVIUM. The Kitchen as a Public Space” at the TUM Chair of Architectural History and Curatorial Practice. It was realized in the TUM Designfactory 1:1. In the video, Tillmann introduces the summer kitchen.

Until September, this space will host collective chopping, planting, harvesting, cooking — and discussions.

The summer kitchen understands cooking as a public space: a place for exchange, encounters, and new perspectives on our food systems.

Schon entdeckt? 👀

Vor der Pinakothek der Moderne — direkt vor den Fenstern der Ausstellung CONVIVIUM. NAHRUNGSSYSTEME AM LIMIT — steht jetzt eine Sommerküche mit großer Kücheninsel und langem Esstisch.

Entworfen und gebaut wurde sie von Tillmann Gebauer gemeinsam mit Studierenden des Seminars „Design Build CONVIVIUM. The Kitchen as a Public Space“ am TUM Lehrstuhl für Architekturgeschichte und kuratorische Praxis. Realisiert wurde das Projekt in der Designfactory 1:1 der TUM. Im Video stellt Tillmann euch die Sommerküche vor.

Bis September wird hier gemeinsam geschnippelt, gepflanzt, geerntet, gekocht — und diskutiert.

Die Sommerküche versteht Kochen als öffentlichen Raum: als Ort für Austausch, Begegnung und neue Perspektiven auf unsere Nahrungssysteme.

In memory of Georg Baselitz, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München presents twelve major works on paper by the artist in the display corridor of the Pinakothek der Moderne. 
Spanning from the 1960s to later phases of his career, the selection offers insight into Baselitz’s radically expressive drawing practice. The Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München holds a unique collection of around 1,100 graphic works by the artist.

Zum Gedenken an Georg Baselitz zeigt die Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München zwölf Meisterblätter des Künstlers im Vitrinengang der Pinakothek der Moderne. 
Die Auswahl spannt einen Bogen von den 1960er Jahren bis in spätere Werkphasen und gibt Einblick in Baselitz’ radikal expressive Zeichnungskunst. Die Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München besitzt einen weltweit einzigartigen Bestand von rund 1.100 graphischen Arbeiten des Künstlers.

Take a breath and look up.

At first glance, the space seems almost empty. But as you linger, a symphony unfolds. Red, green, soft pink, ochre, and white. Rei Naito created an intricate choreography of individual colours and relational positions for the sixty small-format coloured bodies she made for our Rotunda.

COLOUR BEGINNING is now open. Whether you sit on the stools designed by the artist or move through the light falling from the rosette—the colors begin to float.

Give yourselves the time to see. The more you stay, the more the world within the Rotunda opens up. It is a place to reside, to observe, and to simply be.

Nehmt einen Atemzug, blickt nach oben und lasst eure Gedanken schweifen.

Auf den ersten Blick wirkt der Raum fast leer. Doch wer verweilt, dem offenbart sich eine ganze Symphonie. Rot, Grün, zartes Rosa, Ocker, Weiß. Rei Naito hat für ihr aktuelles Rotundenprojekt eine ausgefeilte Choreographie der einzelnen Farben sowie eine Hängeordnung für
die rund 60 kleinformatigen, von ihr gefertigten Farbkörper entwickelt.

COLOUR BEGINNING ist ab heute für euch geöffnet. Ob ihr auf den eigens entworfenen Hockern Platz nehmt oder euch unter dem Licht der großen Rosette bewegt – die Farben beginnen zu schweben.

Nehmt euch die Zeit zum Schauen. Je länger ihr bleibt, desto mehr öffnet sich die Welt in der Rotunde. Ein Ort zum Verweilen, zum Beobachten und zum Ankommen.
