Seit seiner Gründung hat sich das MUCA zu einer führenden Autorität im Aufbau von Sammlungen entwickelt, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf bedeutenden Werken von Künstler*innen liegt, die dafür bekannt sind, dass sie die urbane Landschaft als Teil ihrer Praxis nutzen. Das MUCA als Begegnungsstätte für Urban und Contemporary Art besticht durch eine hochkarätige Ausstellungsprogrammatik. Auf mehreren Kunsterlebnisebenen werden im MUCA nicht nur die Werke renommierter, international gefeierter Künstler gezeigt, uns ist es ebenfalls ein Anliegen experimentellen Formaten und interessanten Positionen eine Plattform zu bieten. Das MUCA versteht sich nicht nur darin Urban Art in den zeitgenössischen Kunstdiskurs einzufügen und eine junge Kunstform zu musealisieren. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Kunstvermittlung. Die Ausstellungen werden durch ein umfangreiches Programm mit Künstler- und Expertengesprächen, Lesungen und Führungen begleitet.

Micallef has consistently embraced the process of print making throughout his career, including early collaborations with counter cultural publisher Pictures On Walls.

“To me, it felt similar to how people once belonged to niche music scenes or discovered illegal raves before platforms like Spotify became heavily corporatised and algorithmically controlled. It drew people from all over the country for just a few days, an anomaly within the more conservative and conventional art system we’ve now become accustomed to.

In some ways, it reminded me of how punk disrupted the established structures of the music industry: a do-it-yourself approach driven by love, care, enthusiasm, and a deliberately disorganised presentation that only added to its unconventional appeal. It felt as though everybody was included, with no hierarchy. They were attracting thousands of people to a scene that you previously thought only you and a handful of others cared about.”

"I’m interested in pushing oil paint to its limits." — Antony Micallef

Experimentation with material has long been central to Antony Micallef ’s practice, particularly the question of how far traditional oil paint can be extended beyond its conventional role. Influences ranged from the photography of Irving Penn to eighteenth-century fashion and the work of designer Alexander McQueen.
Through an extended process of drying, layering, and manipulation, Micallef developed a technique in which oil paint is transformed into textile-like structures resembling lace, weave, or sculptural fabric.
