Ever wondered what it feels like to stand at the very beginning of a painting when the canvas is still blank, the pressure of an upcoming exhibition is rising, and every brushstroke feels like a decision that could change everything?

In this artist talk, Antony Micallef opens up about that electric moment before the work truly begins — the excitement, the creative chaos, the clarity.

It’s an honest, vulnerable look behind the scenes of creation… and you won’t look at his paintings the same way again.

The Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA) is delighted to present The Future Is Stupid, a new solo exhibition by , opening on 8 May 2026.

Marking the first major survey exhibition of one of the most influential British painters of his generation, the show brings together more than 50 significant works spanning Micallef’s career, alongside a bold new series of paintings created especially for his debut in Germany.

For the first time, this series was developed over the course of a year through MUCA’s artist-in-residence programme in Munich sponsored by the MUCA Foundation.

Combining the traditional medium of oil painting with industrial aluminium surfaces, Micallef draws on fragments of imagery encountered across contemporary digital culture to reflect a world shaped by contradiction and shifting realities.

Recurring figures that explore ideas of authority, hysteria, and control form a striking new body of work that anchors wider themes across the exhibition.

Presenting the next exhibition to come up…

Antony Micallef is one of Britain’s most unique and influential painters today. We are proud to announce his new solo-show THE FUTURE IS STUPID at MUCA, starting May 08, 2026.

This exhibition brings together over fifty key works spanning twenty years of his practice, alongside a striking new series of paintings created especially for this exhibition.

In his art, explores the abstraction of figurative painting, employing the heightened materiality of paint to evoke psychological intensity. The new body of work merges his expressive abstraction with fresh commentary on the tensions and contradictions of contemporary society.

Driven by the question: “Can art change the world?“, JR developed the vision of a global participation project: The Inside Out Project.
It’s global participatory art initiative launched in 2011 by the artist JR. It invites people from all over the world to take part by sharing black-and-white portraits that are then printed as large posters and displayed in public spaces. The idea is simple but powerful: use art to give visibility to individual stories, identities, and causes.

Since its launch, more than 500,000 people in over 150 countries have participated. Inside Out installations have appeared in villages, megacities, refugee camps, schools, conflict zones, and cultural landmarks.

In September 2022 , MUCA was proudly part of one of the Inside Out projects by . JR’s team covered the “MUCA Giant Wall” with 400 individual portraits.

All participants and our entire team will take these fond memories with us forever. So no wonder, that we also dedicated a special section to JR within our MUCA permanent collection - currently on display at
