Beautiful Qing Dynasty porcelain plate - Ca Mau shipwreck ware - Ex Sotheby's
A saucer (for a teacup). In the foreground, a fisherman sits on the bank, leaning over his fishing rod. Behind him is a tree, and beneath it a house with the typical curved roof top. On the opposite bank, there is another tree, and beneath it, a boat is moored. In the lake, and on the opposite bank, there is a stone in the foreground. On the lake are two boats, each with a person in it. On the lake bank depicted on the top of the plate, there is a gently rolling landscape with two houses and trees, and a cloud in the background. Around the edge is a zigzag band of segments of slanted, closely spaced lines, which almost merge into a single line but can still be visually distinguished. On the underside are two strongly stylized tree branches or birds.
Having been submerged underwater for nearly 300 years, the porcelain has been perfectly preserved, making it a very rare example of the booming Chinese porcelain industry of the 18th century, which was only copied in Europe after considerable effort ("Meissen porcelain"). Pieces of this quality are found in important porcelain collections.
