Via. Calder Foundation
Marc Chagall was born on this day in 1887.
In 1942, Calder dedicated a brass necklace—whose ornamentation doubles as the work’s inscription: CALDER A BELЖA CHAGALL—to Chagall’s wife, Bella. While this necklace is particularly spectacular in its stylized personalization, Calder often incorporated the initials of his friends and family in the jewelry that he made for them. “Sure in his approach, Calder never succumbed to the many offers to edition his designs,” notes Alexander S. C. Rower. “Making jewelry was very personal for him and each piece exists as a unique work.”
