Anna McCarthy: INVISIBLE BORDERS
Kunstverein Wolfsburg, 5 September – 8 November 2026

The Kunstverein Wolfsburg presents INVISIBLE BORDERS, a solo exhibition by Munich-based artist Anna McCarthy, bringing together works on paper, objects and video.

At its centre is a video documenting a public performance staged by McCarthy on Munich’s Odeonsplatz on 25 November 2025, in collaboration with the with lawyers, activists and politicians of the OFFEN! Kampagne (OFFEN! are an initiative of 200 organisations pledging for an open society and support for refugees). Reconstructing a makeshift border checkpoint, the intervention addressed racial profiling and the mechanisms of state control. Through a group of performers “policing the police”, the work exposed how borders are enforced not only through legal and physical structures, but also through everyday practices of exclusion. The performance culminated in the collective dismantling of the temporary border installation.

Within the exhibition, the video connects McCarthy’s wider exploration of borders, control and resistance to contemporary political realities.

The ambiguity of her paintings has to do with the nature in them, participating in the deception Adorno ascribed to natural beauty [in “Aesthetic Theory“, 1970]. Fifty years ago, Adorno could still claim that our relationship to nature is primarily one of domination and that only culture’s indirect acknowledgment of this unequal power dynamic can bring about future reconciliation. For while the experience of natural beauty recalls a world without domination, there is no real freedom to be found here, as his example of the blackbird so memorably shows. He writes, very few are not moved by a blackbird’s song after the rain. Yet its song is unsettling precisely because it is not a song – the bird acts under the spell of its instincts. No wonder we find the sight of migratory flocks vaguely threatening. For Adorno, art as a cultural entity extricates itself from instinctive behaviour and breaks away from nature’s spell, creating a space in which nature can be experienced more freely.

Her paintings have been described as ambiguous, and there are still many ambiguities to be found here, in this latest series of work. In one, moonlight seems to glisten on a drooping form, casting a shadow to the right. But this form is rooted in a flat space that both withdraws and reasserts its presence. A third form impossibly overlaps the second, a weightless mass of scraped-away paint. These ambiguities are not found but developed over long periods of time. Veronika Hilger begins her paintings with a loose set of gestures, by blocking out the major colour areas. She then examines each canvas closely for these strange moments when painting can be one thing or another and slowly tightens them until they are contained within the strict parameters of her frame.

On Wednesday, 2 September 2026, Julie Mehretu and Mathew Hale held a conversation on Hale’s FACTS OF LIFE drawings and his exhibition at Sperling. Mehretu travelled to Munich for the occasion. A long-time friend of Hale, she is closely familiar with his work. We recommend pre-ordering the book published by X Artists' Books (Berlin/Los Angeles), which includes an essay by that she read at the beginning of the conversation.

As you look around, nature is undeniably present in Veronika Hilger’s paintings.[1] We can soon spot the curve of a hill or a plant, the sky in that peculiar shade of violet-grey, the setting sun or the rising moon. There are also some buildings and figures, in various constellations, and those sounds of someone working alone in an upper room. But the weather, the weather is never quiet. Her paintings have all the strangeness of shuttered heat. As the temperatures rise in our darkened flats, catastrophe looms above us like a mudslide.

[1] The opening paragraph is a response to Adrian Searle’s description of Raoul de Keyser’s paintings, written for the 1994 Hayward Gallery exhibition “Unbound: The Possibilities of Painting.” He writes, “Raoul De Keyser’s paintings have the concentration of a stare…. There’s nature in them, and buildings, and quiet weather, and the sounds of a man working alone in an upper room.”

Mathew Hale’s 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 drawings “are a series of spontaneously generated images made by an adult in relation to their childhood. Emptying his head, the artist begins to draw, and this is what has appeared; not truth, or innocence, but beautiful and disturbing surprises grown in the soil of truth and innocence.

To quote the artist Bruno Schultz: “To you I can reveal the secrets of these drawings. I always doubted that it was I who drew them. Sometimes they seem like unintentional plagiarisms. Something that was whispered to me, that reached my ear … as though a stranger had used my inspiration for purposes unknown, for I confess I have discovered the ‘real thing’.” “ [from the press release]

A publication entitled FACTS OF LIFE: Drawn from forgetfulness by Mathew (and Mummy), featuring texts by Rye Dag Holmboe and Julie Mehretu, is forthcoming from X Artists' Books (Los Angeles/Berlin).

In summer 2026, , in collaboration with and – Albrecht Dürer Gesellschaft, presents an ambitious group exhibition titled 𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑑. Bringing together 30 international positions in contemporary painting, the exhibition offers a multifaceted perspective on current approaches to the medium.

The title 𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑑. – in Latin for “in the same place” – refers to a shared point of departure: the time spent by the participating artists in in Nuremberg as part of the Marianne Defet Painting Scholarship over the past 15 years. Through their encounters with the city, its architecture, people, and histories, each artist has developed a unique dialogue that continues to resonate within their works.

The exhibition builds on these connections, creating both a collective space of resonance and a forward-looking overview of diverse painterly perspectives in contemporary art. 𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑑. is on view until October 3, 2026.
