Our Senior Specialist Modern Art, Annegret Thoma, recommends a remarkable and intimate work by August Macke:

Naked Woman with Child, 1912
Estimate: €40,000–60,000

Created during Macke’s celebrated Bonn years (1911–1913), this luminous oil sketch captures the artist at the height of his creative powers. With vibrant colours and spontaneous brushwork, the composition combines two recurring themes in Macke’s oeuvre: the n**e and the child.
While the scene may evoke the intimacy of family life, the work transcends portraiture and instead reflects Macke’s vision of harmony, nature, and an earthly paradise, a world of warmth, light, and human connection.

Macke’s Bonn period was shaped not only by his involvement with the Blue Rider and the Rhenish Expressionists, but also by a deeply personal sense of happiness rooted in family life and everyday moments. These themes became central to his artistic language and continue to resonate today.
A rare and expressive work filled with summer atmosphere, radiant colour, and emotional immediacy.

Living with art means living with stories, memories, and even imperfections.

In this interview, collectors Dr. Dietrich & Bettina Winkhaus reflect on more than five decades of collecting modern and contemporary art, from discovering expressive painting in the 1960s to navigating restoration, conservation, and the emotional responsibility of caring for artworks.
For the Winkhauses, art is never just decoration. Their collection lives with them: in their home, their daily routines, and their personal history.

The interview also raises fascinating questions:
How should damaged artworks be restored?
Should artists restore their own works?

Works from the Winkhaus Collection will be offered in our Modern & Post-War / Contemporary Art Auction on 12 June.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s birth in 2026, we are pleased to present this atmospheric early work from the estate of Otto Modersohn.

The recurring motif of childhood reflects the artist’s fascination with vulnerability, growth, and the fleeting poetry of everyday life.

A work created at the very dawn of the Spanish Civil War.

A painting that redefined the language of modern art.
Joan Miró’s Peinture (1936), one of the most important works from his legendary Masonite series, comes to auction this season with an estimate of €2,000,000–2,500,000.
Created in the summer of 1936, this extraordinary composition condenses Miró’s iconic visual vocabulary into a radical new form: raw materiality, explosive colour, and magnetic symbolic force. Oil, tar, sand and casein merge on unprimed Masonite in a work of remarkable intensity and historical significance.

Exhibited at Tate Modern, Guggenheim Bilbao and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Peinture stands among the most powerful and uncompromising works in Miró’s oeuvre.
Auction in 2 weeks.

A striking portrait of quiet strength and introspection, W***y Jaeckel’s Girl in a Red Dress (Lotte Wilke) captures the emotional intensity of early modern German painting.
Rendered with expressive brushwork and a rich, earthy palette, the composition is dominated by the vivid red of the sitter’s dress, which radiates warmth against the dark background. Jaeckel balances monumentality and intimacy, portraying Lotte Wilke with remarkable psychological depth and presence.

Associated with German Expressionism and the Berlin Secession, W***y Jaeckel (1888–1944) developed a highly individual style that combined powerful colour contrasts with sensitive figuration. In this portrait, the artist transforms a seemingly quiet moment into a profoundly human encounter.

The painting reveals Jaeckel’s extraordinary ability to unite emotional immediacy with painterly sophistication — a work that feels both deeply personal and timeless.

Time made visible — Michael Wesely transforms a fleeting bouquet into a meditation on memory, movement, and impermanence.
In Bouquet (19.11.–30.11.2005), the German photographer employs his signature long-exposure technique, allowing the lilies to unfold, shift, and fade over days within a single image. The result is both photographic and painterly: a delicate layering of time where blossoms appear suspended between presence and disappearance.

Known internationally for his radical explorations of duration and transformation, Wesely captures not a single moment, but the accumulation of many moments at once. Here, the bouquet becomes a quiet study of transience — an image where time itself leaves a trace.
Michael Wesely (*1963, Munich) is celebrated for his ultra-long exposure photography, with works held in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

This intimate late work from circa 1906 captures the Pierre-Auguste Renoir‘s enduring fascination with the female form — sensual, serene, and suspended between presence and dream.

With its delicate balance of cool skin tones and warm crimson hues, the composition radiates the unmistakable softness and harmony of Renoir’s mature style. The odalisque motif, reimagined with quiet elegance, reveals a master of colour, light, and emotion at the height of his artistic vision.

Provenance includes the celebrated collections of Georges Urion and Hatchik Sevadjian, among the most distinguished Parisian collectors of the early 20th century.
