Dr Andreas Curtius,
Curator of Paintings and Sculptures
How long have you been working at the Dürer House, and in what capacity?
Since 2006, I have been responsible for the paintings and sculptures on display at the Albrecht Dürer House on behalf of the City of Nuremberg’s Art Collections.
Which object in the house particularly appeals to you?
The high-quality copies of Dürer’s original paintings were partly painted during various Dürer exhibitions in Nuremberg, and partly in the museums where the originals are now housed. I particularly like the copy of the 1498 self-portrait, which now hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It was painted in Madrid in 1930 by the Spanish artist Francisco Nuñez-Losada and is almost indistinguishable from the original.
My fondest memory:
The two exhibitions I curated at the Dürer House: ‘Foreign Treasures: Baroque House Altar from Cysoing Abbey Based on Motifs by Albrecht Dürer’ (2018/19) and ‘Reflections on Dürer: Jo Niklaus on his 80th Birthday’ (2021/22).
My favourite place:
In the Painting Gallery, you can admire more Dürer paintings in one place than anywhere else in the world (albeit only as painted copies).
