Kursword / Kursword of Frederick the Belligerent

🌐:

⏳: 1419-1425

📏: Total length 117.6 cm Blade 91.5 cm Weight 1667 g

Description:

The electoral sword of Frederick the Quarrelsome is one of the richest of the surviving swords of European rulers of the Middle Ages. As the first electoral sword of the Wettins, it testifies to the rise of this family, which has ruled the Margraviate of Meissen since 1089, into the ranks of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation who were entitled to elect kings. The iron vessel and the velvet-covered wooden scabbard are completely covered with gold-plated and colored enameled silver. The filigree flower band in wire enamel on the sheath shows the national colors of Hungary in red, white and green. The shields on the setting of the rock crystal pommel bear the German royal eagle as well as the Hungarian and Bohemian coats of arms. The heraldic symbols refer to Sigismund, King of Hungary and Bohemia. The black eagle refers to his German royal dignity, which determined him to succeed him as German emperor. The sword was a gift from the king to Frederick IV, the Martial, who took over the government as Margrave of Meissen in 1407 and as Elector of Saxony in 1423, succeeding the last Ascanian, Albrecht III. The solemn ceremony of the enfeoffment on August 1, 1425 in Ofen (Buda) was probably the reason for the award of the sword, which was later honored as an electoral sword and recorded accordingly in the inventories of the electoral silver chamber and the armory.

Sword ( ) with Integral
🌐:
⏳: c 1730
📏: Sword: 3 11/16 × 31 inches (9.3 × 78.8 cm) Length (barrel): 7 3/4 inches (19.7 cm) Length (stock/hilt): 5 5/8 inches (14.3 cm) Length (sword): 25 3/8 inches (64.5 cm) Width (max. barrel exterior): 9/16 inches (1.5 cm) Diameter (caliber): 1/2 inches (1.2 cm)

Description:
Used for hunting or on horseback, this weapon unites a firearm with a long blade. The pistol would have been used first, fired at the animal at close range to inflict a mortal wound, after which the hunter would dismount to deliver the final blow with the sword. Combination weapons of this type were popular in eighteenth-century Europe and were often elaborately decorated for the noblemen who owned them. However, few were crafted with as much care and skill as this example, which is outstanding for the quality of the design and ex*****on of its ornament.

The shape, construction, and adornment of this pistol and sword are closely related to two combination weapons today in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (Dresden State Art Collections), Germany, that were presented in 1725 to King Augustus II “the Strong” of Poland by his master of the hunt Carl Gottlob von Leubnitz. One of the weapons in Dresden and this one here are signed by Johann Andreas Niefind, a gunmaker working in the small town of Olbernhau in Saxony, Germany, where von Leubnitz owned a gun manufactory.

This Landsknecht sword of the South German type, the so-called Katzbalger, has a figure-of-eight curved crossguard that is heavily fire-gilded. The pommel, which swings upwards, is decorated with four double St. Andrew's crosses, probably as a reference to the owner's connection to the House of Habsburg. There is a continuous poetic inscription on the knife handles of the by-knives. Ulrich von Schellenberg fought as an imperial officer for both Maximilian I and Charles V in northern Italy against France and Venice.

Iron sword with brass k**b
🌐: or
⏳: Mid 14th century
📏: 105.5 cm

Description:
(Translated from dane with Google Translate)
In 1365, Pierre de Lusignan – King of Cyprus and titular King of Jerusalem – attacked and captured the Egyptian port city of Alexandria. However, his men refused to move on to Cairo, and before the young Mamluk sultan al-Malik al-Ashraf Shaban and his guardian could come to the city's rescue, the Christians were gone.
A number of European weapons captured or left behind were hung up in Alexandria's arsenal as trophies and provided with Arabic inscriptions. This was given by one of Shaban's officers Sayf al-Din al-Ukuz al-Malik Ashraf in 769 H (1367-68), but was later taken to Istanbul.

Rapier
🌐:
⏳: ca. 1540
📏: Total L: 110.2 cm; L. of blade 97.2 cm

Description:
From the early sixteenth century onward, the practice of wearing a sword or rapier with civilian dress made duels between unarmored opponents more common. Lacking the armor or shield worn in battle, combatants had to block or parry an attack by other means. Methods of defense included the use of a dagger or a buckler held in the left hand and an increased reliance on parries made with the rapier itself. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, distinct schools of fencing developed rapidly in Italy, France, Germany, and Spain. Instruction in the art and science of fencing became an indispensable part of a nobleman’s education. Consequently, accomplished fencing masters were hired to teach at the principal courts and universities of Europe. From about 1525 to about 1625, the rapier was regularly worn in tandem with a parrying dagger. They were sometimes made and decorated as a set. By the mid-seventeenth century, however, parrying with the rapier blade alone had become the preferred style as a result of the development of refined fencing techniques and lighter, smaller rapiers. Most forms of left-hand parries were abandoned, except in southern Italy and Spain, where parrying daggers remained popular well into the eighteenth century.
