UPCOMING: Dichtung. In Arbeit - IGNACIO URIARTE

In his multifaceted work, Ignacio Uriarte (born 1972 in Krefeld, lives in Valencia, Spain) reveals the poetry and grace inherent in everyday materials and in repetitive processes of daily (working) life.

At RAUM SCHROTH, Ignacio Uriarte presents new works on paper and specially conceived installations, as well as works from the Schroth Collection, where they hold a central position.
Through the factors of time and space, the artist transforms the smallest, seemingly banal elements—such as a carelessly scribbled line, a simple punctuation mark, or even a tiny cent coin—into poetry that conveys glimmers of light and iridescent effects, the illusion of movement and space, tension and stillness, as well as great beauty.

After decades of painting with thick resin-wax paint, Jo Kuhn found himself unable to continue painting. He managed to find a way to keep creating colour dialogues nonetheless: using a technique jointly developed by Canon and Hahnemühle for high-quality pigment printing on heavily absorbent paper. Since 2011, he composes his images on a computer, with the physical properties of the materials playing a major role in their appearance. The print edition is very small; for the large formats, there are only three copies.

Around twenty of these gems, smaller and larger ones, are part of our current exhibition DIALOGUES OF COLOUR at RAUM SCHROTH, up until the youngest group of works that consists of monochrome squares combined to diptychs.

A particularly precious and truly breathtaking group of Jo Kuhn's works consists of the small-format, dense paintings created with pastel chalk on velour paper (slide 2, 3).
With gouache on handmade paper, Jo Kuhn loved to paint throughout almost every phase of his career (and one can trace every step of his artistic journey within this comprehensive set of works on paper - slide 4 shows a selection on view at our current exhibition).
Later, in the early 2010s, Jo Kuhn turned to a high-quality pigment printing technique out of health-related necessity, and has been passionately dedicated to it ever since (slide 1).

Our current exhibition FARBDIALOGE at RAUM SCHROTH provides insight into the coherent development of an artist’s life’s work:

Jo Kuhn once described the form as a vessel designed to contain the content – the colour. From 1991 onwards, he defines this as simply as possible in order to create the optimal conditions for colour as a largely autonomous means of creation.

He develops his internal composition with precise, horizontally oriented areas of colour, which provide him with a stable position on the two-dimensional picture surface – no inside, no outside, no direction of reading – and which, with their extremely reduced form, will prove their worth over the coming decades.

The colour fields build upon one another in a finely balanced interplay between the dimensions of the surfaces and the composition of the tones, holding one another in a calm equilibrium through tension. Further and further he reduced the initially still relatively fine-grained compositions, until, around the turn of the millennium, he arrived at a two-surface composition that soon became more refined:

“The horizontal division of the picture plane evolved from an initially dramatic contrast between large and small in the upper and lower sections of the picture, respectively, depending on the emotional expressive potential of the two colour components, to a minimal formal tension.” (Jo Kuhn)

At this time of the year, we wish you peace and joy.
May you enjoy the quiet darkness and the cheerful lights, share talk and laughter with loved ones and find some time to rest, to reflect, to recollect, to recharge.
