Happy International Translation Day! 🎉 I wanted to share my translation story ⬇️

It all started in Grade 11 at my school in Canada, where I am originally from. My school counselor Mr. Rowe let me fill out a quiz to see what my potential future career could be. After completing the quiz, it said either translator or interpreter! So, even at the age of 17 I knew that translation was my destiny.

Even before, I had a knack and passion for languages and culture that made me hungry to discover more! I grew up bilingually speaking both English and French at home and as school, thanks for my Canadian mother and Swiss father. Then, I started learning German when I was 14 while living in Switzerland, absolutely loving the language.

While many of my friends back home thought the German language to be harsh, I found it it be a highly nuanced language with a super interesting and rich culture. I was particularly interested in German cinema and history, especially post-war DDR.

I then went on to complete my Bachelor's in French, German and Translation Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where I adored taking those classes. Those were some of the best years of my life!

After working at the Governemnt of Canada for a few years, I then embarked on my journey to Berlin where I have been (almost) ever since. I worked as an editor, translator, translation/localization manager and international marketer, gaining valuable knowledge from all sides!

Working in the industry of translation has always been my dream, my passion, and I’m so glad I could make a career out of it!

AI is here, and it's here to stay 🦾🤖. We "knowledge workers" need to get on board in order to understand how we can stay relevant, employable, and valuable in the day and age when technology, automation, data, and machine learning prevail. I have my fingers in many pies 🍰, hear industry news and trends from all sides, and they all scream "AI!!" 😲 Here I outline some ways that you can adapt to changing times. ⬆️

Germany has an incredible history of cinema with many famous German actors throughout the past century.
My post can barely pay homage to this country's great love for film as I can't possibly add them all here. But, what I will do is share some that were pivotal in my growing enthusiasm and love for this country.

If you're ever in Berlin, make sure you stop by the Film Museum at Potsdamer Platz in the Sony Center or check out the historic and still used today cinematic studios of near Potsdam.

When a new client contacts you, there are a few things you need to do to ensure it'll be a happy working relationship, especially for you. I've read many personal notes on here and LinkedIn about sucky clients who pay too little, want fast jobs, aren't transparent, the list goes on.

Our job as freelance language service providers, translators, interpreters, content creators, and writers is to take measures into our own hands in assessing the quality of employers. We should also try educating them on fair and best practices when it comes to deadlines and workflows.

Great French film to watch this weekend and some of my FAVORITES! In following my last post about ways to learn a language, getting into films from that country is a fun way of hearing the language in action.
These are some tantalizing French movies with some exciting intrigues, powerful women in the lead roles, lots of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat!
