GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility GBIF provides the human and informatics infrastructure to enable primary biodiversity data to be made discoverable and accessible via the Internet.

GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility—is an international network and research infrastructure aimed at providing anyone, anywhere, open access to data about all life on Earth. More than 1.8 billion species occurrence records, ranging from museum specimens to amateur observations, are accessible via the GBIF data portal. 🐢 What tortoises taught us about speciation

A recent study of Sonoran and Mojave desert tortoises explores how species can diverge even when they still occasionally hybridize.

🧬 Using comparative genomics, GBIF-mediated biodiversity data and NASA UV data, researchers identified genes under positive selection linked to reproduction, cell division, chromosome segregation, vision and eye development.

The findings suggest that natural selection acting on important functional genes (not major chromosome changes) may help drive reproductive isolation and adaptation to different environments. 🏜️

🟡 Acacia you haven't heard, it's !

Wattles (Acacia) are the largest genus of plants in Australia, with more than 1,000 species described. Although many species are known for their iconic green and gold colours, 💚💛 there is variation in flower colour and leaf and stem structure among Acacia species.

Many Acacia species are fire-resistant, a trait that makes them well-suited to Australian landscapes, but this has also contributed to Acacias becoming invasive in other parts of the world.

Taking Belize’s butterflies global 🦋🌎

Although more than 7.8 million records about biodiversity in Belize are currently available through GBIF, less than 1% represent insects.

To bridge this gap, an EU-funded BID project led by Environmental Research Institute (University of Belize) is mobilizing butterfly occurrence records from fruit-feeding butterfly surveys conducted at Pook’s Hill in 2016 to support research, conservation and biodiversity reporting.

This is the first dataset published through UB-ERI's wider effort to mobilize historical and current biodiversity monitoring data, and the first butterfly dataset published from Belize.

The project brings together researchers and protected-area co-managers to mobilize existing datasets to GBIF and build a more representative picture of Belize’s biodiversity across species, places and time.💚

💧 Oh the hue-manatee!

A new initiative is bringing together decades of manatee records from universities, NGOs and government agencies across South America and Mexico, helping fill critical gaps in open access data records.

The project (supported through the BID programme) involves standardizing and publishing records from surveys, biological collections, rescue programmes and telemetry studies, including satellite tracking data collected using ARGOS and Globalstar transmitters. 🛰️

Alongside mobilizing data, the project is building regional capacity through training on biodiversity data standards and GBIF publishing.

🗻 The Hindu Kush Himalayan Biodiversity Information Facility (HKHBIF) has launched a GBIF hosted portal! 🥳

Hosted by ICIMOD the HKHBIF portal brings together critical biodiversity information for Asian mountain ecosystems.

🧊 The HKH is home to the highest mountain ranges and the largest volume of ice outside of polar regions. The new portal provides an entry point for expanding the regional data mobilization network for conservation, research and decision-making.
