UNHOLY ALPHABET

The Unholy Alphabet is a total negation of the linguistic sign. Born from a pit of cancelled language, the letters of the Roman alphabet have been torn apart, ripped to shreds to form something that is more image than sign. Taking inspiration from the illegible semantics of Black Metal—the unreadable logos and incomprehensible vocal utterances—the Unholy Alphabet is a language outside of sense. It is something from the depths that conveys more feeling than meaning.

Made in collaboration with designer Ben King, with support from Nordic Culture Point.

Samuel Brzeski (UK/NO) is an artist, writer and publisher working with language as raw material. He is particularly interested in how the use of both voice and language are instrumental in the formation of subjectivity and the enforcement of hierarchies.
Brzeski studied Literature at University of Sheffield, Art at Bergen Art Academy, and was a participant at Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht), Maumaus Independent Study Program (Lisbon) and The Mountain School of Arts (Los Angeles). As an extension of his practice, he runs ۷ıცཞąɬıơŋąƖ ʂɛɱąŋɬıƈʂ ℘ཞɛʂʂ , publishing texts, scores, and sound works from creative practitioners who work with voice and language. Samuel is based between Bergen, Norway and Maastricht, Netherlands.

Stort tillykke til Zven Balslev der i går fik tildelt Æresprisen af Forening for Boghaandværk for sit mangeårige arbejde i bogens tjeneste!

Til den 20. August kan man i Bladr se CULT PUMPs udstilling Onomatopoietikon: Larmende zines og grafisk støj.

I forbindelse med den retrospektive udgivelse “Cult Pump Years” præsenterer forlaget et udvalg af udgivelser med fokus på støj; koncertplakater, zines, bøger og plader fra arkivet.

Åben lørdag d. 15. august 13-16 eller efter aftale.

I weekenden udstilles de udvalgte industrielle bøger af Årets Bedste Bogarbejde på O - Overgaden Institut for Samtidskunst.

The exhibition presents three photographs of a 2025 ritual performance which took place in Odsherred, Denmark, alongside a site-specific beeswax candle installation and a preliminary version of new text by Ida Westh-Hansen. The work, as a site-specific action, examines the ritualization of landscape and the figure of the witch as a mediator between human and ecological systems. Grounded in a methodology of re-enchantment, the project posits the landscape as an active participant rather than a passive backdrop. By playfully invoking rituals, the exhibition examines contemporary society's distancing from the environments it inhabits. Overall, it functions as a material inquiry into the symbiotic relationship between form, folklore, and environmental awareness.

Ida Westh-Hansen is a Danish, Vienna-based, visual artist. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2018, where she studied installation and performative sculpture with Monica Bonvicini. In 2025 she completed a three-month artist residency at L-AiR in Himeji, Japan and has an upcoming residency scheduled in Nepal for 2027. 'Kerzenserif' marks her first solo exhibition in Denmark.

'Onomatopoietikon: Loud zines and graphic noise'

To mark the retrospective publication “Cult Pump Years”, the imprint presents a selection of publications focusing on noise: concert posters, zines, books and records from the archive. From the very beginning, Cult Pump has had close ties with the experimental music scene. The two forms – zines and noise – share more or less the same starting point: ‘let’s see what happens’, or, as editor Zven Balslev writes in the foreword to “Cult Pump Years”: There’s a wall separating experimental music and graphic art, but it’s rather the same craft: standing there painting a snowstorm. Or: sitting in a cockpit without having been given either a manual or instructions. The plane’s going to crash anyway, so we might as well fiddle with the buttons and switch them on and off… it’s fun.

As part of the exhibition at Bladr, the LP “Pestmaskine” by Heksehyl is being presented in a limited edition of 115 copies; it was originally released on cassette in 2019. Primitive harsh noise, just like Grandma used to make it.

"Onomatopoeia" is the fancy word for sound words like ‘Bzzzzz’ or ‘skrrrrrr’.

CULT PUMP publishes, prints and distributes artists' books, comics and posters, often produced using screen printing in limited editions. Located next to the experimental concert venue Mayhem, it is also a printmaking workshop and was founded with the vision of creating a collective space for underground and emerging artists and creators to publish their work outside the mainstream. CULT PUMP was founded in 2010 by the painter, printer, comic artist and artist Zven Balslev. The publisher’s philosophy is an extension of an anarchic DIY zine culture, inherited from both punk and underground comics.

In the region of Grenen two different water bodies of the Baltic Sea (where the artist is from, a former colony) and the Northern sea (where the exhibition takes place, a former colonizer) meet through the Kattegat Strait. The different salinities of the water bodies (one salty, the other brackish), create a unique environment of clashing waves and currents.
In the midst of polycrises, where water and border politics come forth, the idea of control and seamless transactions in the background, show their false rigidness more strongly.
The new series of textile sculptures, images and sound, created specifically for Bladr, wish to open those restless waters as maps for transcending imaginaries and cross-historic connections.

“The waves tell me nothing, they hide their currents under the surface. The waves tell me everything, there is so much happening i’m drowning. No wonder the halocine is deemed a non-swim zone”.

Pille-Riin Jaik (born 1991 in Tallinn, Estonia) is a Vienna-based interdisciplinary artist working with camera-based mediums, performance and sound as well as with various weavings in textual or spatial form. Her artistic work is focused on text, plants, textile, storytelling, surplus and waste materials/thoughts in feminist and class aware discourse.
Currently she is working on her PhD research about political and poetic storytelling in Baltic landscapes .

This book offers a curated editorial reading of Basel’s rich cultural landscape. Structured as a syllabary, it allows readers to explore twelve key institutions—museums, foundations, and cultural spaces—through the pairing of a word with a place, or a concept with an institution, revealing how art quietly yet insistently inhabits the city. Samuel Leuenberger, co-curator of the project with Mousse, carefully selected these twelve words to capture the essence and defining characteristics of each institution. Debate has always been a part of design practice. Traditionally, it has taken place through letters, manifestos, interviews, round tables, and other formats which have allowed practicing designers to both question the assumptions of their field and sharpen and defend their own positions within it. Today, the mediums for these exchanges have largely disappeared from public view, and with them, the habit of seeking them out. At Odds brings together a non-exhaustive archive of debate intended to be read, photocopied, and taken away; in service of a serious culture of design discourse among practitioners.

Rebholz and Sohrab turn the space into a working publishing platform: A collection of historical critical writings by design practitioners are accompanied by a photocopier, and visitors are invited to build a publication from the texts they choose.

Join us to celebrate the launch of 'Sakse' by Julie Stavad. There will be cold drinks and the opportunity to view, and purchase the book.

Sakse is created by visual artists Julie Stavad and Andrea Lund Sørensen. The book is a collection of selected material from Stavad’s archive. Lund Sørensen has curated the archive, and together they have created a mysterious work that bends linear narrative. As a whole, Sakse appears as a mosaic. A small, chaotic book about ghosts, form, and what lies in front of and behind one another.

'Tips of the sung' by Samuel Brzeski

"Tips of the Sung is a collection of interdisciplinary texts from Samuel Brzeski composed over the five years whilst he was Associate Artist at Lydgalleriet. The collection brings together performance scripts for voice and video with newly composed texts for the page. Centring on the vibrations of the voice, the texts exist somewhere between signification and delirium, at times making more sound than sense.

The texts are full of bumbling mumbles, meandering hums, homophones, inner voices, affirmations, motivations, subvocalisations, resolutions, errors in speech production, peach seduction, car maintenance manuals, self-help fallacies, roomy echo chambers, overheard language lessons, morning meditations, and other forms of verbal rehearsal at the limits of language."
