The International Day
The International Day of Peace is celebrated by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on September 21 every year since 1981 to uphold the values of peace among people and to renounce violence. This year, it is celebrated under the theme "Invest in Peace for All"
On this occasion, we highlight an object that is considered a centuries – old message of peace, and remember the first peace treaty in history, which was signed between the most prominent kings of the Nineteenth Dynasty, the son of King Seti I, King Rameses II, and the king of the Hittites, who captured Kadesh, the center of Egyptian influence in Syria, then the Egyptian king prepared an army to fight the Hittites king, who enslaved its people. But the battle was not a decisive one, as both sides agreed to respect each other's borders.
Rameses II returned to Egypt and more than 16 years later, the Egyptian king concluded a peace treaty in the twenty-first year of his reign with the Hittite king, which was a treaty of security and brotherhood, and King Ramesses II devoted himself to the implementation of his architectural and engineering projects. The terms of the treaty are evident from the text written on a silver plaque at the feet of the Egyptian god Ra in the temple of Ramesseum and the temples of Karnak. An identical copy of the original is also displayed on the walls of the United Nations headquarters in New York City as a symbol of the first peace agreement in history.
On this occasion, we shed light on a distinctive statue of King Ramesses II, kneeling and holding a sarcophagus upon which are three deities are the god Ra and Amun, and another broken small statue. The statue has the king’s cartouche and the date of his coronation inscribed with his name and date of coronation, and an inscription honoring Amun.
