⚡ How Did People Deal with Injuries Before the Development of Modern Medicine?
💫 People used the resources and tools available to them at the time, such as traditional remedies, the knowledge passed down from their ancestors, and what is known as folk medicine or herbal medicine.
Some people also believed that illnesses could be caused by the anger of the Gods or by evil spirits.
⚡ The beginning of modern medicine in Egypt dates back to the era of Mohamed Ali Pasha, when he sent educational missions to Europe and established the first medical school at Qasr El Aini in 1827.
⚡ Before modern medicine, there were no X-rays or medical tests. Instead, people relied on observation, experience, herbs, and trial and error. Despite these simple resources, many people survived and were saved because of proper and timely action, what we now know as first aid.
✨ The world celebrates World First Aid Day every September. The occasion was established in 2000 at the initiative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). It aims to raise awareness about the importance of learning first aid and providing immediate assistance before professional medical help arrives, as the first few minutes after an accident can make the difference between life and death.
💫 On this special occasion, we are pleased to present to you this unique piece:
🏅 A gold commemorative medal, one side features an image of King Farouk wearing his ceremonial attire, while the other side features a crescent containing the inscription: "Gold Commemorative Medal for Combating Cholera, 1947".
The crescent encloses a scene depicting a doctor vaccinating a girl, with a nurse standing beside her. Above the scene, an airplane is shown spraying disinfectant. Between the doctor and the nurse appears the inscription "Fouks".
The medal is attached to a light green satin ribbon, which ends with a gold breast pin.
