Anubis is usually shown as a man with the head of a jackal or as a full jackal. The ancient Egyptians associated jackals with cemeteries because these animals were often seen near burial grounds. By worshipping Anubis, they believed he would protect the dead from harm
In Egyptian mythology, Anubis is the son of Osiris and Nephthys (in most versions of the myth). After Osiris was killed by his brother Set, Anubis helped embalm Osiris, making him the first mummy. Because of this, Anubis became strongly connected with mummification.
One of Anubis’s most famous roles is in the “Weighing of the Heart” ceremony. In the Hall of Judgment, he weighs the heart of the dead person against the feather of truth, which belongs to the goddess Ma’at. If the heart is lighter than the feather, the soul is allowed to enter the afterlife. If it is heavier, it is devoured by a monster.
Over time, Anubis was later associated with the god Osiris, who became the main ruler of the underworld. However, Anubis remained an important guide and protector of souls.
Anubis represents protection, justice, and the safe journey to the afterlife in ancient Egyptian belief.
