Born as a non-profit space in 2017, Suburbia evolved into a gallery the year after, following the idea of gathering artists from various continents and cultural backgrounds in an unexpected cluster. Suburbia's unconventional and hyperconnected family is constantly changing, expanding alongside artist's and curator's friendships and interests, staging particulars and temporary projects in the citie

s where suburbians are based. Mirroring this philosophy, the project space 'Satellite' popped up in Cape Town (South Africa), and recently in Florence (Italy). The meeting of suburbians somewhere in the world usually happens in art fairs or projects like 'Satellite'. The occasion is always a celebration for a group of long-distance friends who share the idea of an artwork a field where different cultures and backgrounds communicate with one another. By participating in antique knowledge, precious memories, secret languages, and futuristic crafts.

Suburbia Contemporary Tastemakers Series
Lavínia Diniz Freitas
For this chapter, we introduce a voice operating at the intersection of art, science, and society.
Lavínia Diniz Freitas is an independent curator and the founder of APERTΩARTS, an international platform dedicated to boundary-breaking projects that expand the dialogue between art, technology, and politics.
Her curatorial approach is grounded in collaboration and driven by the belief that art can act as a catalyst for cross-cultural exchange and public debate. Working across continents—from Riyadh to Miami, São Paulo to Leipzig, Paris to Qingdao—she collaborates with artists to realize ambitious visions that challenge perception and propose new modes of coexistence.
Through projects such as Event Horizon at Frieze Sculpture (London), In the Planet Where We Met (Peru–Lebanon), and Jambo Venice (Venice–Zanzibar), she has consistently fostered encounters between diverse contexts, imagining a more plural, democratic, and accessible future for contemporary art.
Her selection from our catalogue reflects these values: works that traverse geographies and disciplines, prompting collective reflection and open-ended dialogue.

For this chapter, we invite Patricia Sorroche, an independent curator and Head of Exhibitions at the Museu Tàpies (Barcelona). Previously, she worked at MACBA as Associate Curator and Coordinator of the Permanent Collection, developing her work from within the museum’s registration and collection departments.

Alongside her institutional roles, Sorroche has sustained an independent curatorial practice focused on research, critical discourse, and exhibition-making. She is part of several research and critical thought groups linked to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), the University of Barcelona, and Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica, and is co-founder of the curatorial collective LaOtra, which addresses institutional violence from a gender perspective.

Her selection from our catalogue reflects this positioning: works that attend to context, domestic and social spaces, and the politics embedded in representation. Pieces that invite slow reading and critical awareness.

For this chapter, we invite a voice shaped by academic rigor, curatorial practice, and deep market expertise within the contemporary African art landscape.

Jean le Clus-Theron, founder of Le Clus Advisory, works internationally with collectors, galleries, and auction houses, advising on acquisitions, collection management, and private sales with strategic clarity and long-term vision.

Her selection brings together works that explore material transformation, landscape, and systems of meaning. Pieces that move between the elemental and the constructed, inviting sustained looking and layered interpretation. A perspective informed by research, experience, and an acute sensitivity to how artworks function within collections over time.

DM for a catalogue

“Still” holds a duality within it that defines the essence of this exhibition: it suggests immobility, the silence of a suspended instant, yet forcefully affirms continuity, an enduring presence in time. “Still” in this semantic space, between apparent quietude and obstinate survival, the practices of Jake Aikman and Alexandra Karakashian converge. For both, the artistic act becomes a form of radical resilience: a way to bear witness to what remains, to what resists the erosion of history and the force of the elements.

For this new chapter, we introduce Aurélie Souris, an art collector whose passion was shaped by her husband, Josselin Souris, who first introduced her to the world of contemporary art and its artists. Aurélie approaches artworks instinctively, drawn to pieces for their aesthetic or symbolic beauty.

Her appreciation also grows through discovering the story and motivations of the artists behind the works. Sometimes she brings her own personal narrative to the interpretation of a piece; other times, it is the artist’s story that reveals the full depth and beauty of the work.

Her selection from our catalogue reflects this sensitivity, works that resonate emotionally, visually, and narratively.

For this chapter, we invite a voice that operates where curatorship, strategy and contemporary image-making intersect.

Virginie Puertolas-Syn, Founder of The Art Syn Agency, works internationally with institutions, collectors and galleries, shaping exhibitions and acquisition frameworks with precision and vision.

Her choices from our current catalogue focus on works that build structure, not just atmosphere. Pieces that activate relationships, create direction and expand the narrative potential of a collection. It is a perspective anchored in methodology and refined through global exhibition practice.
