Until November 22, the Portuguese Pavilion is open at the Fondaco Marcello, which hosts the 𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐒𝐊𝐘𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐒 project by artist Alexandre Estrela, curated by Ana Baliza and Ricardo Nicolau.

𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐒𝐊𝐘𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐒 is a cybernetic system that reacts in real time to planetary seismic activity, converting it into image and sound. The work revisits natural anomalies and beings that foreshadow geological instabilities, such as the catfish Namazu in Japanese mythology; and draws a parallel between the rift that the 1755 earthquake opened in Western thought —
empowering science at the expense of religion — and the contemporary erosion of trust in science and blind faith in technology, which make way for new obscurantist myths.

At a time of radical crisis and paralyzing diagnoses, the practices presented here propose alternative ways of dealing with imposed narratives and imagining other futures. The works brought together here disorient everyday experiences and historical milestones to give rise to new reconfigurations. They are gestures that propose different rhythms of attention and knowledge, capable of opening cracks from which to imagine alternative ways of being, remembering, organizing ourselves, and recognizing one another.

❗️Álvaro Urbano's () work is featured in Still Joy — From Ukraine into the World, an exhibition presented by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and the PinchukArtCentre () as part of the Eventi Collaterali of the 61st International Art Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia. It will be held at the Palazzo Contarini Polignac in Venice from May 9th until August 1st, 2026.

🌱On the second floor of the palazzo, Álvaro Urbano stages an unlikely situation: two blooming kalyna plants (Viburnum opulus) thrive within the gallery's architecture. Though they appear to have sprouted from the floorboards, these plants are meticulously crafted from metal and handpainted. A sculptural gesture that provides permanence to a fleeting moment.

In this setting, Urbano utilizes the kalyna as a narrative vessel to explore the intersection of botany and resilience. While the plant is deeply embedded in Ukrainian folklore, literature, and oral history—where its red berries typically convey social and geographical belonging—Urbano reimagines its form to communicate the weight of current affairs. By rendering the plants with white spring blooms rather than their characteristic red berries, the artist shifts the focus towards the future, transmitting a sentiment of tenacity, anticipation, and hope.

This sense of arrested time extends to another element of Urbano's installation, where raindrops have stopped while running down the windows of the exhibition space. Suspended in a single moment, they prolong this instant for the entire summer, fracturing the temporality of the installation with what can be seen outside, making the sunny days to appear even brighter. In a world where experiencing nature in its organic fullness is often not an option, these sculptures serve as botanical symbols of endurance.

In anticipation of Alexandre Estrela’s official representation of Portugal in the 61st International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, it feels like the right moment to look back at some of the key institutional exhibitions that have shaped his practice over the years.

Alexandre Estrela’s work is an investigation on the essence of images that expands spatially and temporally through different supports. In his videos and installations, Estrela examines the subject’s psychological reactions to images in their interaction with matter. Each piece has several layers to which we are initiated step by step. The works are not just there to be watched, but rather to be unfolded. Each piece convokes synesthetic experiences, visual and sound illusions, aural and chromatic sensations that function as perceptive traps, leading the subject toward conceptual levels. With this strategy Estrela is constantly problematizing the elements that constitute the act of perceiving, splitting vision into further sensible dimensions towards the unseen and the unheard.
