‘THE OLD BUTCHER SHOP’

Several years ago, my wife and I bought a building in our small riverbank town of Bréhémont, an old port here on the Loire River in central France. For many years the town’s butcher shop was located in this structure. Yet what was once a thriving commerce on the main and only drag had become an abandoned, decrepit old building, something of an eyesore in the town; but the building’s bones were good as was the price, so we bought it. In fact, the original structure underlying the current above ground building was a medieval two story house built well before the dikes were eventually constructed in the 17th century. In order to contain annual seasonal flooding, with the help of experienced Dutch engineers brought down by the French rulers, dikes were built all along the banks of the Loire River. Pre-existing structures were either torn down, or raised up, once the dikes were in place. Our building was subsequently raised up two stories and at some point in time, large store front windows were installed on the ground floor, facing the river, making our building the only one in the town with a magnificent light filled view.

This sumptuous view of the Loire was our starting point, as we proceeded to gut the building and create what eventually became three fully furnished rental flats, two of which have even better views of the Loire River, as they are both perched above the ground floor former shop area. The former shop area has currently been turned into a flexible, multi-purpose space that serves as an artist workshop during the off season and might eventually become a ‘Pop-Up’ restaurant or Coffee Shop of sorts during the peak tourist season.

The three furnished flats are all available for short term furnished rentals during the tourist season from April to October ( https://www.loirevalleyinspiration.com/rentals). Each one of these rental apartments (one studio, a one bedroom flat, and another 2 bedroom apartment) has been renovated and decorated with antique decorative items and other unique features that make each flat distinctly different from the others. This is what I have been doing for many years now, renovating historical buildings and apartments in Paris and in the Loire Valley. Aside from my years of studying Fine Arts in the USA and in France, I’ve learned about renovation and construction on the job and I have now acquired the confidence and the skill sets necessary for full fledged renovation jobs such as this one. It has been a long stretch getting the job done; but the building is now up and running with only some minor external finishing touches remaining.

During the off season when tourists are few and far between in the Loire Valley, we manage an Artist Residency program. Artists are housed in the furnished flats and they can use the atelier shop area as a work space if need be. We have had writers, painters, and other types of artists come and stay with us and we welcome any creative person who feels that they need a bit of the unique inspiration that can only be derived from being here in the heart of the Loire Valley castle country of France.
