Sir John Monash Centre Sometimes harrowing, often moving - the SJMC tells Australia’s story of the Western Front, in the words of those who served. Admission is free.

The SJMC is the hub of the Australian Remembrance Trail and a must-see site in Northern France, within easy access of Paris. The Sir John Monash Centre (SJMC) is located in Northern France, near the town of Villers-Bretonneux and the city of Amiens, 140 kilometres north-east of Paris. The SJMC is a dynamic and innovative First World War memorial centre, telling the story of Australia’s involvement

on the Western Front battlefields during the First World War. Set on the grounds of the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery and behind the Australian National Memorial, the SJMC is one of the key sites of the Australian Remembrance Trail on the Western Front. With new and archival footage, animation, maps, music and soundscapes, the SJMC is designed to engage people of all ages and nationalities. Visitors gain a better understanding of the journey of ordinary Australians in extraordinary circumstances, and a deeper connection with the places where they fought and died. 🏅Moins d’un mois après les commémorations de l’Anzac Day, le Centre Sir John Monash accueillait le 12 mai la cérémonie des prix Sadlier Stokes 2025.

Un moment fort pour célébrer un autre visage de l’amitié franco-australienne : la jeunesse, la transmission et la créativité.

Bravo aux lauréats :
🏆 École primaire : les CM2 de l’école Mick Micheyl de Montmerle-sur-Saône
🏆 Collège : les élèves de 3eC et 3eD du Collège Albert Schweitzer de La Bassée
🏆 Lycée : les élèves de terminale CAP métallier et de 1re et terminale Bac Pro Ouvrage du Bâtiment du Lycée Peltier de Ham

Les participants ont également découvert en avant-première « Bringing Their Spirits Home », la nouvelle exposition temporaire du Centre Sir John Monash.

🇦🇺 À travers le travail de Joe Flick, l’exposition met en lumière l’histoire des soldats des Premières Nations d’Australie engagés dans l’Australian Imperial Force durant la Première Guerre mondiale.

La remise des prix et l’inauguration de l’exposition se sont ainsi rejointes comme un véritable pont entre les jeunes générations et la mémoire des soldats, des Premières Nations et d’ailleurs. Un moment de vive émotion partagé entre Joe Flick et les élèves, rappelant que la mémoire ne se transmet pas seulement : elle se vit et continue d’émouvoir aujourd’hui. 💐

🏅 Less than a month after the emotion and solemnity of the Anzac Day commemorations, the Sir John Monash Centre hosted the 2025 Sadlier Stokes Prize ceremony on 12 May.

A meaningful occasion celebrating another side of the friendship between France and Australia: youth, transmission and creativity.

Congratulations to this year’s winners:
🏆 Primary school category: the Year 5 pupils from Mick Micheyl Primary School in Montmerle-sur-Saône
🏆 Secondary school category: the Year 9C and 9D students from Albert Schweitzer Secondary School in La Bassée
🏆 High school category: the final-year metalwork students and the first- and final-year vocational building construction students in Ham

Participants also enjoyed a preview of “Bringing Their Spirits Home”, the Sir John Monash Centre’s new temporary exhibition.

🇦🇺 Through the work of Joe Flick, the exhibition highlights the stories of First Nations Australian soldiers who served in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War.

The prize ceremony and the exhibition opening ultimately came together as a bridge between younger generations and the memory of soldiers, from the First Nations and beyond. It was a deeply moving moment shared between Joe Flick and the students, reminding us that remembrance is not only passed on — it is lived and still deeply felt today. 💐

Les tranchées furent une structure emblématique des champs de bataille de la Première Guerre mondiale. Pour les soldats de toutes origines, elles sont devenues un lieu de vie où régnaient un danger constant, des bombardements incessants, et des conditions météorologique et sanitaires épouvantables. La vie dans ces boyaux était aussi misérable que dangereuse.

Trenches defined the battlefields of the First World War. For soldiers of every background they became a shared world – a place of constant danger, relentless shellfire, brutal weather and filth. Life in the trenches was as miserable as it was dangerous.

Ce documentaire de 27 minutes suit Peter Milliken sur les traces de son arrière-grand-oncle, Private William Allen Irwin DCM, un soldat des Premières Nations australiennes.

Le film explore le courage méconnu des soldats aborigènes australiens ainsi que le lien profond qui unit les familles à leurs ancêtres enterrés loin de leurs terres traditionnelles.

Joe Flick’s work shines a light on First Nations soldiers who have long remained in the shadows, reconnecting them to their land, their communities, and a shared cultural memory of Country.

Set within the Sir John Monash Centre, this exhibition invites visitors to reflect on remembrance, recognition, and the enduring legacy of Aboriginal service.

A 27-minute documentary directed by Dylan Nicholls, following Peter Milliken’s journey to uncover the story of his great-granduncle, Pte. William Allen Irwin DCM—a First Nations soldier who served on the Western Front during the First World War.

🎺 Le 22 avril dernier, à l’approche de l’Anzac Day, les musiciens de l’Australian Army Band ont proposé un concert au cœur de la cathédrale Notre Dame d’Amiens, en partenariat avec le Centre Sir John Monash, le Préfet de la Somme et Somme Tourisme .

C’est dans cet édifice d’exception et pour le plus grand plaisir des centaines de spectateurs présents que celui-ci a joué des morceaux emblématiques durant près d’une heure. 🇦🇺

We were delighted to welcome Senator Stéphane Demilly to the Sir John Monash Centre and the Australian National Memorial today, alongside the Mayor of Villers-Bretonneux, Bruno Vaquez.

It was a pleasure to share the visitor experience and the stories of Australians who served on the Western Front.

We look forward to continuing to work together to honour and preserve this shared history.

Nous avons eu le plaisir d’accueillir aujourd’hui le sénateur Stephane Demilly au Centre Sir John Monash et au Mémorial National australien, aux côtés du Maire de Villers-Bretonneux, Bruno Vaquez.

🇦🇺 Anzac Day 2026

Au lever du jour, le 25 avril dernier, une cérémonie empreinte d’émotions s’est tenue au Mémorial National australien, près de Villers-Bretonneux.

Dès 5h30, un hommage a été rendu aux Australiens qui ont combattu et sont morts dans des guerres, conflits et opérations de paix, hier et aujourd’hui, , avec une pensée particulière pour ceux tombés lors de la Première Guerre mondiale sur le front occidental.

Cette cérémonie s’est accompagnée dans l’après-midi d’un hommage rendu à Bullecourt.

Ne les oublions pas 💐

🇦🇺 Anzac Day 2026

At dawn on 25 April, a moving and respectful service took place at the Australian National Memorial near Villers-Bretonneux to mark Anzac Day.

From 5.30 am, a tribute was paid to the Australians who have fought and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, both past and present, in the service of their nation, with a special remembrance of those who fell on the Western Front during the First World War.

This service was followed in the afternoon by a commemoration in Bullecourt.
