D-Day - Royal Navy Leading Seaman Arthur Thomas was recommended for an immediate gallantry award.
This recommendation came on the 23rd June 1944 and was signed by the Commanding Officer of Assault Group O-4 - HMS Prince Charles.
It says:- Leading Seaman Taylor's action and behaviour materially contributed to the success of the US Rangers on Pointe du Hoc.

US troops landing on Utah Beach D-Day.
Rear Admiral Moon US Navy later commented on enemy gunfire:
"The losses on the initial assault on the beach were small. This is attributed largely to emphasis placed upon heavy gunfire support and the effective work of the Bombardment Group in providing it. Intelligence indicated extremely heavy enemy defenses against landings on Utah Beach. The 28 batteries defending Utah Beach consisted of 111 guns of medium to heavy calibre. Information obtained from air reconnaissance indicated that at least 75 per cent of these guns were effective at the time of the assault. Examination of captured batteries indicates that approximately 50 percent of the guns were still operational after capture."

Utah Beach June 6th 1944 - Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. famously stated "We'll start the war from right here!".
This memorial just behind Utah Beach at Saint Martin de Varreville commemorates the French 2nd Armoured Division who landed here.

The first week of June 1944 - both British and American servicemen are on guard on the Weymouth seafront. Contrary to many books on the subject the Rangers marched along an empty seafront as the local civilian population were kept out of sight of the embarkation points for security reasons.
