No. 04 of the 99 — KMZ AJAX-12 “KGB”, USSR, 1952.

The KMZ Ajax-12 is a subminiature espionage camera made for the Soviet Union’s intelligence agency, the KGB. A spring-driven clockwork mechanism let an operative take a sequence of pictures without winding the film by hand, with the camera hidden in or behind another object. A civilian version, the Zenith MF1, appeared in 1989.

No. 03 of the 99 — Kodak Petite, United States, 1929.

The Kodak Petite is a beautifully coloured version of Kodak’s famous Vest Pocket camera, model B. Small and easy to use, it came in blue, green, lavender and pink, and was sold as a fashionable accessory. Its “autographic” feature let you write a few words directly on the film through a small opening in the back; they appeared when the film was developed.

1925, AI model with the Leica I (Mod. A).

Introduced at the Leipzig trade show in 1925, the Leica I arrived when most cameras were bulky and cumbersome. This compact 35 mm camera, one of the first to be mass-produced, made candid, spontaneous photography possible. Photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson made it famous. Its name is said to have been coined by its designer, Oskar Barnack: “Leitz” and “Camera”, joined into “Leica”.

No. 02 of the 99 — RolleiFlex Baby (K1A), Germany, 1931.

The Rolleiflex 4×4, affectionately nicknamed the “Baby”, went into production in March 1931 and was made until 1943. The K1A was the first 4×4 cm camera from Franke & Heidecke, after the original 6×6 Rolleiflex. Its high price in the difficult 1930s kept sales low, which is why these cameras are scarce and prized by collectors today.

Thank you to the 1000+ visitors who honored us by coming to discover our exceptional exhibition at the Bièvres International Photography Fair.

For the 99 Cameras Museum, it was a true pleasure to meet such a passionate audience in the incredible setting of Grange aux Fraises in Bièvres.

This unique exhibition is the result of a successful collaboration between the 99 Cameras Museum, the French Museum of Photography, and the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (Cnam).

À PROPOS DE CET ATELIER

La collection d’appareils photo attire aujourd’hui une nouvelle génération, qui n’était pas née lorsque ces modèles étaient à leur apogée. Entre curiosité, attrait pour le vintage et fascination pour des objets devenus iconiques, ces nouveaux collectionneurs redéfinissent les codes d’un univers longtemps réservé aux initiés. Cet atelier est une invitation à la rencontre et à l’échange entre passionnés, débutants comme confirmés. Il sera animé en présence de Federico Benincasa, fondateur du 99 Cameras Museum, premier musée parisien entièrement dédié aux appareils photo emblématiques.
